I originally posted this topic in the Security forum. Here is the description from the original message:

I had a computer infected with the Win 7 Antispyware 2012 rogue anti-spyware program. I removed it using the the instructions located at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-antispyware-2012. Now, a week after the initial removal, the user suddenly cannot connect to other computers on the network. The "Computer Browser" and "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" services will not start, failing with Error 1060 and Error 1075, respectively. The user has also informed me that they were still seeing Google redirects during the past week, which leads me to believe that there is still a rootkit installed. I have tried running tdsskiller again, but it says there are no infections. I need help removing whatever is still installed on this computer, as I would rather not have to wipe it clean.

In that thread, I was told to run the Farbar Service Scanner and paste the results in a new topic in this thread. Here are the results from the scan:

There are several registry keys missing, but I'd like to check first if the computer is fairly clean.

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

Let's start with missing "hosts" file.

Open Notepad.
Paste the following text into it:

# Copyright 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Go File>Save As and...

1. Name the file hosts. (no extension; make sure there is just a "dot" at the end <--- VERY IMPORTANT!)
2. Make sure, "Save as type:" is set to "All Files (*.*)
3. File is saved to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder

Posted Image

NOTE.
If you receive You don't have permission to save in this location message take ownership of C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
If the above doesn't work save the file to some known location, like your desktop, copy it from there and paste it to "etc" folder.

Good job :)

Check if redirection is still present.

Next....

You have several registry keys missing.
Windows firewall and Security Center are not working.

WARNING!
Using internet with no active firewall poses a serious threat to your computer security.
If you're behind a router you're fine.
If no router is involved limit your internet activity to bare minimum.

Following steps involve registry editing. Please create new restore point before proceeding!!!
How to:
XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247
Vista and Seven - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/create-a-restore-point-for-windows-vistas-system-restore/

Download Seven.zip file from here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/files/download/9-registry-network-keys/
Unzip the file.
You'll find several files inside.
Double click bfe.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double click mpssvc.reg and confirm the prompt.
Double click wscsvc.reg and confirm the prompt.

Restart computer.

Click Start and in "Start search" type in:
regedit
Press Enter.

Registry editor will open.
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BFE
Right click on BFE key, click "Permissions"
Click on Add button, type Everyone and click OK.
Now click once on Everyone
Below, in "Permissions" pane checkmark "Alow" in "Full control" row.
Click OK.

In a set of files you downloaded in previous step find start_services.bat.
Right click on it, click "Run As Administrator" to run the fix.
Command prompt black window will pop-up for a split second and it'll disappear. That's normal.

See if you can turn Windows firewall on and see if you can access Security Center.
Post new FSS log.

Check if redirection is still present.

I did a few searches and there appears to be no redirection. However, the user said that it was intermittent. I will try again shortly.

Your computer is clean Posted Image

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

If you don't know how to do it...
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405
Vista and Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-system-restore-in-windows-vista/

2. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

3. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

4. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

5. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

6. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

7. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

8. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

9. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

10. Except for MBAM and TFC, which are keepers you can simply delete all other tools we used as they don't install.

Yes. The "Computer Browser" service will now start correctly, however the "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" service still fails with an Error 1075 and the user still cannot connect to any resources on the network. Upon looking in the System Log in the Event Viewer, I have found the following error:

The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service depends the following service: NetBT. This service might not be installed.

I looked in the Registry at HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and the NetBT key is missing.
