Hello,

I was told to post here following my previous topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic436679.html/page__p__2540864#entry2540864 , which has a thorough description of my problem and some of my logs(Security Check, MiniToolBox & Gmer).

___________________________________________
The following is my first post from that thread:

Two days ago, I wanted to check whether my computer was free of any virus, malware or keyloggers.

I used AVG Free Edition for the virus scan and I used Malwarebytes free edition for the malware scan and both said no threats were found.

Anyways, that is just the intro, my real problem is the detection of keyloggers.

I’m not sure how to detect where a keylogger presents, so I searched on google and found this guide: http://www.internetgeeks.org/tech/hacking/find-keylogger-computer/
(Section 3)

I followed the instructions on the guide and noticed one of the startup in msconfig was checked after I disabled all and turned off my AVG. So according to the guide, I have a keylogger. However I’m not sure whether this guide is trustworthy or not, so I did not take any actions.

I then ran the ESET Online Scanner and found 4 threats, which were all removed (stated).

- a variant of Win32/Kryptik.TFJ trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
- a variant of Win32/Kryptik.TFJ trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
- a variant of Java/Agent.DZ trojan deleted - quarantined
- a variant of Win32/KillProc.A application cleaned by deleting - quarantined

So I tried to use the guide I found from google again but I received the same result: one startup checked.

Next, I ran ESET for the second time in case there were any flaws. But this time, it said no threats were found.

If the guide is not a trick, then it means that I still have a keylogger on my computer.

I’m not sure whether it’s true and how to remove the keylogger if it is.

My OS: Windows XP
Scanners installed: AVG Free, Malwarebytes Free

Sorry for the long read, I tried to provide as many details as possible. Thanks for any help!

I have run Defogger to disable any CD emulator programs.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. [/b]
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

keyloggers are malware like every other virus/trojan etc too. That means normally an anti virus program will see them. The guide you linked has a very naive and probably incorrect understanding of what a keylogger consists off and how to detect/remove them.

I'm going to assume that the file that reenabled itself was ctfmon.exe? If so see here for the official statement of Microsoft that this Microsoft file will not stay disabled if you disable it with MSConfig: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599

Your logs are looking clean.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Yes it was ctfmon.exe! I had doubt about the link. Good thing I didn't take any actions. I now have a deeper understanding of this.

Thanks for confirming, now I won't be worried anymore!

Appreciated for the help.

Hi,

glad to have been of help.

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version X. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • Once the installation is finished, open Adobe Reader and accept the warranty if prompted.
  • Click on Help and select Check for Updates.
  • A window will open and Adobe will check for Updates. If any updates are found to be available click on Download.
  • Once the update is downloaded you will get a system notification telling you so. Click on the popup to restore the window.
  • In the window that opens click Install.
  • Once the update is done click Close.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

I have installed Adobe Reader X. Looks good now that I don't receive a popup about updating Adobe Reader whenever I use it.

Also, do I simply delete all the things I downloaded for the logs? (SecurityCheck, Gmer etc.)

Thanks for your help (:!

Hi,

Read those last few lines, in order to keep your pc safe and clean:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
    • Download OTC from the following mirror and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on Posted Image
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  • If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :(.
