While attempting to connect my sisters computer to a new cable modem hookup...we kept getting an error that the computer was unable to flush the dns. From cmd prompt as well as the repair connection option. I investigated this problem further and keep getting told that I need to turn on the dns service in services. Problem is, it is not listed anywhere in the list. I attempted to seach the registry for the specific key and it is in fact gone. I need to know how to get it back...hopefully without reinstalling windows and compromising data. Computer is running microsoft xp media center version 2002 with sp3 installed. Any help is appreciated! Paula

Following steps involve registry editing. Please create new restore point before proceeding!!!
How to:
XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247
Vista and Seven - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/create-a-restore-point-for-windows-vistas-system-restore/

Download following registry fix: http://www.filedropper.com/dnscache
Double click on downloaded file and confirm the prompt.

Restart computer, check on internet connection and post new FSS log.

My sisters computer will work now with my modem hooked to it...exact same kind of modem Arris TM602G...but not with her new one. Almost as if modem is holding old settings or something. I have reset it with the manual reset button but still nothing. When I do ipconfig it gives me no default gateway address. I am usually pretty good with this sort of thing but this has me stumped. Thanks for your help.

Your internet connection settings look fine, but....we have couple of other issues.

"hosts" file is missing.

Open Notepad.
Paste the following text into it:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Go File>Save As and...

1. Name the file hosts. (no extension; make sure there is just a "dot" at the end <--- VERY IMPORTANT!)
2. Make sure, "Save as type:" is set to "All Files (*.*)
3. Make sure the file is saved to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder

All looks just fine....

Do we still have this situation?

My sisters computer will work now with my modem hooked to it...exact same kind of modem Arris TM602G...but not with her new one

If so, instead of using "reset" pinhole turn the computer off, disconnect modem from power source for 1 minute, restart everything.

Yes, still have this problem. I would think it was the modem but I have 3 modems total...all the same brand from same isp. One will work with her computer (mine) the other 2 both have the same issue. No gateway address when doing ipconfig and it will not let on the internet.

Did you?

If so, instead of using "reset" pinhole turn the computer off, disconnect modem from power source for 1 minute, restart everything.

Does your computer connect through "bad" modem?
