A while ago I had some problems with virus/malware on my computer (redirect virus and fake anti virus program). I think I removed them but have still have been having some issues. For starters my start menu and all programs were suddenly empty, I managed to get the program files back but most of the sub files remain empty. I attempted to run unhide.exe some time ago with no luck. Also, on start up my notepad pops up with '[.ShellClassInfo] LocalizesourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787dRe' which I've also attempted to fix but have been unable to.

I'm running windows vista home premium 32bit and currently am using free versions of AVG and Kaspersky, neither of which are detecting any issues at the moment.

Any help would be great, thank you

Press Windows+R key and type

%temp% and click ok

If you find a folder called smtmp, copy it to a safe location and let me know

For notepad startup check this

Good luck

Did you face issues running unhide fix?

Let me know what was the issue

Also Try this

Download Recuva

http://www.filehippo.com/download_recuva/

Install it and when you get the recuva screen

Click Cancel on the wizard.
Click on Options... >> Actions Tab. Check "Restore folder structure."
Run a regular scan on the system drive.

When complete, use the filter box in the upper right corner and type

*.lnk

Select all the files and recover them to a folder.Browse through the folder.
Now you should get back the smtmp folder. You should see folders like 1,2,4.

Let me know after this

Good luck

I may have run into an issue with unhide, but I can't remember what it was

I downloaded recuva and ran the scan but when I use the filter box and type in *.lnk there aren't any files listed to recover.

Its not possible to restore your startmenu ,desktop icons but we have an alternative

Click on start button and type

cmd

Right click-Select-Run as administrator

Now run this command

attrib -h c:\*.* /s /d

Ignore errors regarding access denied. This should unhide your Hidden files.

Now,right click on your start button-Properties

Click on customize-use default settings

Download

http://www.mediafire.com/?4qz7avpdl4krwyb

Extract the rar file and copy the contents present in it to

C:\programdata\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

You need to install winrar to extract it

http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar41b5.exe

Good luck
