Picked up a virus/s a couple of weeks ago. Guy on Nt compatible read hijack this log , said I had Spysheriff, I had seen that on the Hijacked browser. Followed your self help guide (v.good by the way), also followed your remove Spysheriff instructions. To date the P.C has been scanned by Adaware, Spybot, Spydoctor,Noadaware, Trojan hunter, Ewido, Panda, Bit defender, Norton, Anti vir, plus something else on the self help page i'd forgotten, and the Microsoft stuff. All virus activity has stopped as far as I can see, but I don't undrstand the results of the scans that I'll show you, Norton etc are coming up clean, but Panda and Bit defender are still finding stuff, some of the B.D are files in Norton's quarantine, but I'm not sure about the rest. Would be really pleased if you can check it out for me Thanks. Sorry it's so long !

Hello smeagol and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. Let's start off with a couple of things here.

Step #1

It appears that you have an L2M infection. Please do the following:
  • Download l2mfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.exe to start the installation.
  • Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts.
  • Open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing the Enter key.
This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the entire content of that log into this thread and I will review the information when it comes in.

Step #2

I just want to verify that this file is legitimate. It should be but I do not know why the Task Manager would be running at startup.

Go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan:D:\WINNT\system32\taskmgr.exe
Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here along with the l2mfix log from Step 1 and a new HijackThis log.

Cheers.

OT

Hi, don't like to call you Old timer, but anyway cheers for the reply. Over the weekend, while waiting for a reply, and studying more on BC, followed a bit more of the instructions in the help guides, and after that Housecall scanned and said I was clean, but have done what you asked to be on the safe side.
The taskmgr.exe came up fine, the system builder who built my P.C always had it running from bootup so i wasn't too worried about that, here is the log for l2mfix.

Hi smeagol. It seems strange that the taskmgr.exe is part of the startup but if you are sure that it is safe and want to leave it there then that is up to you. There really isn't any need for it even if it is valid.

Ok, let's get to work. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop:
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing the Enter key.
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, Notepad will open with a log. Post that log back here as directed at the end of the fix.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post the new L2m logs back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options>Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Office] D:\WINNT\system32\msoff.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntdll.dll] D:\WINNT\system32\msoff.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: MS-DOS Emulation - D:\WINNT\system32\fp6q03j5e.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: printpn2 - printpn2.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ShellCompatibility - D:\WINNT\system32\mjclus.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):D:\WINNT\system32\msoff.exe
D:\WINNT\system32\fp6q03j5e.dll
D:\WINNT\system32\mjclus.dll

Now perform a search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.printpn2.dll
Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with the log file from the l2mfix scan and details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi again O.T, thanks for the instructions, have done them, the Registry entries and files to delete had already gone, what I did at the weekend must have worked, the L2m log is included below as is the new Hijack this log. I scanned with Housecall first for the online scans which said there was no problems, then I scanned with Panda which for some reason always says there is something, here is the result of that.

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/cws.searchmeup Not disinfected D:\WINNT\uniq
Dialer:Dialer.NQ Not disinfected C:\sext.chm
Virus:Exploit/Codebase.AJ Not disinfected C:\sext.chm[1.htm]
Dialer:Dialer.NQ Not disinfected C:\sext.chm[d_sext.exe]
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\smitRem\Process.exe
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\l2mfix\Process.exe
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\l2mfix.exe[Process.exe]
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\smitRem.exe[Process.exe]

Lastly I ran Adaware, didn't expect that to find anything as I only scanned with it over the weekend.
It found 11 entries for Win32 Trojan downloader, how the heck did that get in ?????????

Here are the other two logs.

Hi smeagol. The HijackThis log looks great. Good job.

Before we wrap things up verify that the following file is gone and if not delete it manually:C:\sext.chm
We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You already have a good firewall and a good antivirus application intalled and running. It is important to have both to protect your system, and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Hi again O.T, sorry it's been so long to get back to you. Thanks again very much. I'm still in awe at what you guy's do for us, makes you think that all is not quite lost for this 'God forsaken' planet (although I'd still pop off at the first chance haha) ! Hopefully I won't need to pester you for a while, but in the meantime this site will make an impressive learning tool. Cheers
Smeagol. Devon. U.K.
