I've been trying to get rid of whatever virus I have by going back to original factory settings. It makes like it is running the reformat but never does. Windows stays open, it periodically accesses the hard drive, etc. I did not make a bootable disk but still can. I'm afraid that it would be infected and would be worthless. the microsoft help people told me to get a copy of Win 7 on a disk, which for me would mean buying one. I haven't gotten to Dell What do I do? Right now I'm really afraid to use it so I went back to my old HP laptop.

The machine runs Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. on a Dell Vostro desktop.

The problem started as a Google redirect which I can stop by using the back arrow or going back after the other website loads. Then the windows 7 security updates failed, and continue failing. I contacted MS who gave me some stuff to do which failed and then told me to do a restore to factory settings using my DVD. Since I don't have a DVD, none came with the computer, I told them this was impossible without me buying another copy of the system which I can't see doing. No answer after that. I did try using the Dell system restore and it does nothing.

I also ran every virus program I could find AVG, Avira, plus these
* http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* http://www.superantispyware.com/ - SuperAntispyware
* http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx - Windows Defender: Home Page
* http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html - Spybot Search & Destroy
* http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php - Ad-Aware Free

While they detected some stuff, nothing of any significance.

I am guessing that the virus may have come from the bogus USPS email I opened by mistake thinking it was valid since I had just sent a package via USPS. That is the only bad email I've opened. Doesn't mean it is but thought I'd mention it.

As of now I have shut down that computer and gone back to my oldie. Slow but no visible problems.

I also tried using win7 that checks and fixes the registry but detected no change. (may not have run it correctly or it may not be the problem)

I really don't know how to proceed. Right now the machine is a boat anchor.

Thanks

Do you have a recovery partition on your hdd? If you do, you should be able to boot to it and recover from there. Some computers, particularly Toshibas, require you to F8 to startup repair where you can select the recovery manager. Try that.

I ran CCleaner along with the other programs and made any changes it said to, if it said to make changes. I've run so many I don't remember specifics any longer.

To BushPilot Resetting from the partition isn't working. See beginning posts and I don't have a DVD so I can't do that which was what MS told me to do.

Well CCleaner could have deleted files that are required to replace updated files and to revert back to default.

You could borrow one from a friend who has the same model of computer.

You can order them from HP, Dell, Acer, and others.

Either your recovery partition is corrupted or your hdd is failing. Does the computer have built in hardware diags?
