I know its a long story, but it has a point. (I think :) )

I'm "fixing" my Sis-in-law's computer (yeah, I'm probably not the best one to do this). It runs XP, but I'm not sure what kind of computer it is. At Thanksgiving, she says to me, "my computer is running slow." I said, "what kind of virus protection are you running?" (I know that's not the only reason a comp can run slow, but I figured it was a place to start.) She tells me, "we had something on it a couple of years ago, but it expired." I had her start up the computer, which we're gonna call "Bob" for clarity. Bob has 3 users set up. On User#1 (the main one), I noticed she had a fake virus alert mal. She says it doesn't pop up on the other (also admin) users. I said, "Don't worry, I know a program that can take care of that." I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and told it to run. It couldn't so eventually I ended up over on User #2, where it finally started. I told it to run a full scan since Bob had been unprotected for so long. We left before it finished. I have attached the first 2 logs mbam produced. (it's a long story as to why those are dated in December.) So my SIL calls to tell me she can no longer connect to the internet, and User#1 has nothing on its desktop, and isn't functioning properly. Everything I have done since has been from User#2. (User #3 also appears to be functional but no internet anywhere. I can connect to the internet with my laptop, so I know it's not the problem) I tried downloading and reinstalling IE. I also tried to install Chrome but the install failed when Chrome couldn't reach the internet. Bob told me to run chkdsk /f so I did. Bob is stuck in Safe Mode now. Oh, BTW, all attempts at sys restore has failed. No matter which of the many restore points I choose, Bob tells me that no changes have been made.

Okay, now the big question: Have I killed Bob?

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

====================================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
    This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
    This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this. My own computer crashed thanks to some "help" from a different website's help forum, and I had to reformat and reinstall. Fortunately, I have an external hard drive and didn't lose much. I finally convinced Bob to run the programs. Here are the results:

When you're done with your light reading, please tell me if I should just reformat and reinstall windows. Or is there a reasonably simple fix to all this? btw, Bob is still stuck in safe mode and cannot connect to the internet. IE doesn't even start itself.

You have more serious issues there.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
