My computer frequently hangs on me and then freezes. It happens frequently, and requires me to hard start it by pressing the re-start button.

I tried to defrag my HD in safe mode, but it gives me the following error:

Diskcleanup caused an invalid page fault in module KRNL386.dll at 0001:00001C41!
EZX=0000092 CS=...... EIP=0000..... EFLGS=00000.......

Could the problem be due to bad ram? The computer is a PII, 400MHZ with 64MB of ram.

Ouch! could be the lack of RAM. I would recommend 256mb minimun. Can you start in safe mode? Try Start>Run>msconfig>Startup.
Try unchecking everything to test and see if something you are running is hanging you computer. Now reboot to see if it starts normally.
