I have instructions to Partion and Format my hand-me-down Compaq with 98. The origianl disks cannot be found. I have a legal copy of 98SE but how do I install the necessary drivers?

Good morning.
First go to the COmpag site and plug in the model of your computer. Second download every driver even if you don't think you have the hardware on your computer. Unzip any files that come compressed. Burn it to a CD\DVD. Download a Boot disk. Use it to format your hard drive. I would use fdisk to see if you have a hidden partition. If you do delete all partitions and configure to one FAT32 partition.
Start your install and with prompted for drivers insert the driver CD you created.

Thanks acklan. Downloaded the drivers like you said. Bootdisk.com lists several 98 bootdisks. Which one do I choose? What is mirror 1,2,3?

I would think that "Windows 98 SE Custom, No Ramdrive" would do the trick.

'Mirrors' are just alternate download locations for the same file.

Hope that helps.

I made the boot disk but when I try to boot with it I get that error you get when a disk is in the A: and it asks you to abort retry or fail; remove disk and hit any key.

It does not sound like your disk is setup for booting the computer. It should have brought you to three choices. 1) Start with CDrom support 2) Start without CDrom 3) Start with minimun . If you do not get these options your floppy is not booting first, check the BIOS, or you did not configure your boot disk properly (please do not take that the wrong way).
