I read the tutorial , hope I did it right.
I became infected with a bios virus about a month ago. I turned on the computer and it locked out the logitech wireless keyboard and mouse and proceeded to do an update of the bios. I had to re-install the software for the devices with a usb keyboard. The computer would not consistenly start up past the first post, so I kept re- flashing the bios by taking out the battery. About a week ago I heard the hard drive working excessively and noticed it was downloading and installing something and that's when the cpu would reach 100 % for long periods of time and cripple any application I tried to run.

============= FINISH: 22:08:37.51 ===============

I ran the dds and gmer and upload the txt files.

When I ran gmer the first time the process died while looking at "shadow copy 8" that's all I could see in that instance.

Thanks in advance

Nick

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.

Please post the logs for my review.

Nothing suspicious was found in your ComboFix log.

Using the Add/Remove Programs list remove these old versions of Jave.

Hi, I unloaded those programs but the cpu usage still jacks up to 100%.

I ran a movie and the movie player runs around 70% cpu with other services making up the difference.

There's something stealth still inhabiting the system. If I don't run any programs the cpu jumps down to 4 - 5 % after awhile.

I'm currently trying to understand the book " the rootkit arsenal ".

Anything else you can think of is appreciated.

thanks

Open your Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) keys.
Click the processes tab
Which process is taking a lot of CPU?

Hi. I've been pulling up random programs and it seems that anything to do with video, like firefox plug in container,
mplayer, the itunes visualizer, these spike the cpu from 45 % running to 85 % depending on video playing. Also,
sometimes any browser running even though there's no video playing, then sometimes any program will spike the system for an
extended period of time. Then some videos will play and the browsers are normal and programs work for awhile. No matter
what I see on the processes tab , the cpu alway's cranks up to 100% even if it all doesn't add up that way . I have the show all processes
running when I check it out.

thanks

Please check to see if you have a good restore point prior to the time your problem started.

Restore one if you can.

Keep me posted.

Hi,

The only restore point before 12/29/11 is a 2005 point which is a windows critical update.
Is this a good point to go back to ?

thanks

With Windows 7 I think you should use the Last Known Good Configuration.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Using-Last-Known-Good-Configuration

Follow the instructions on that page.

Do you mean that you cannot go to Safe Mode?
