Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 64-bit, IE 8.0.7600
This has been a very difficult recovery. Here is the story. One day in Sept my son was playing a game or on some game website and subsequently got a bunch of error messages. One said he had a problem and needed to execute a system restore. I suspect this was in a pop-up and, being a naive kid, he clicked on it and all heck broke lose. I was out of town so I have no idea other than what he told me. The computer had Trend Micro Titanium AV running at the time but it did nothing to stop the damage.
Since, I contacted Trend and they gave me instructions to remove the problem. One of those instructions was to delete temp files. Now that I scanned through the description of the System Check spyware, I think this could have been the culprit and the temp file removal might have been a problem. Nonetheless, the computer will boot to Windows 7 in regular mode. I can now see the icons on the desktop and execute them. I can connect to the internet but I do get redirected to weird pages when I try to go to BC or Micro. So there must be something wrong there. I am also unable to install the latest version of the Trend Micro software even after uninstalling the old, removing registries, loading in Safe mode, etc. I cannot turn on the Windows firewall either.
Sorry for the long message but I hope it gives some helpful background on what I have done and what problems I still see. Any ideas? My hijackthis log file is attached. I should also point out that I am not very technically savvy.
