Hi, I was referred here from the Windows 7 forum.
I hardly know where to begin. I am having so many problems. I run Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1 on a Sony Vaio laptop. I will just list some of the things that are going on. My Vaio Care quit working. It will load and immediately I get the message "Vaio Care has experienced an error. Please restart application." This is unfortunate since my Windows Updates are handled with VC, although I think I am current on updates. Restarting the app and rebooting do nothing. I always get the same message.
If I right-click on my desktop to personalize, I get the message "Explorer.EXE No such interface supported." Right-clicking to screen resolution gets the same message, although right-clicking to all the other options works fine.
Some programs quit working. My e-Sword program won't run correctly. Many things seem to be missing. I get the message "Error encountered opening Bible file: c:\Program Files (x86)\e-Sword\kjv.bblx" and several other error messages saying it can't locate various functions of e-Sword. My Incredimail won't pull up at all. Since I couldn't pull up my usual email program, I tried to pull up Windows Live Mail, but neither would it pull up. I went to uninstall it and had the option to repair it and it works fine now. Secunia PSI won't load right. I get just a blank screen. I uninstalled and reinstalled it but still the same results. When I try to save a picture to my picture file I get a "class not registered" error. Several items from my Control Panel can't be clicked on and opened.
I uninstalled and reinstalled IE 9 and that fixed other problems I had been having, such as Desktop Weather working and Yahoo Im working. Trying to run MalwareBytes I get an error message " Run-time error '5': Invalid procedure call or argument.
Web pages pull up just fine. I don't have a problem with that.
I couldn't access my System Restore for the longest, since it's within my Vaio Care, but I did finally get to it in a round about way and tried to restore to 3 previous dates, but all still works as I have described. Sometimes my system restore attempts were unsuccessful and other times they worked. During the one I attempted in safe mode, I got the BSOD with an entire page of "stop error" messaging. Various other error messages occurred with other attempts which I can't remember. I will list all of these below.
Oh, and it seems that lately, when I go to misconfig to take out some of my startup programs, it doesn't stop them from loading.
Ok, here are the various error messages I have received over the past couple of days.
1. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable 0x80070570
2. rstrui.exe application error The instruction at 0xfb4aca53 referenced memory at 0x90305338. The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program.
3. A problem had been detected and window has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. A process or thread crucial to system operation had unexpectedly exited or been terminated. If this is the first time you've seen this "stop error" screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to make sure any new hardware of software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware of software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart you computer , press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode. Technical information: ***STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x0000000000000003, 0xFFFFF8008E2EB30, 0xFFFFFA8008E2EE10, 0xFFFFF800033DB8B0) collecting data from crash dump...Initializing disk for crash dump...Beginning dump of physical memory.Dumping physical memory to disk:100 Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system admin or technical support group for further assistance.

I had Norton, but since it didn't find anything, I deleted it and ran Windows Defender which also didn't find anything, so I disbable WD and reinstalled my Norton. I tried startup repair from safe mode. I checked intel site for updates and Sony site as well.
I downloaded and ran Belarc Advisor. Here is the information from Belarc:

WDC WD5000BEVT-55A0RT0 [Hard drive] (500.11 GB) -- drive 0, s/n WD-WX11EA022968, rev 01.01A01, SMART Status: Healthy

I got the Data Lifeguard Tools from Western Digital Service and Support site downloaded on my laptop, and ran the extended test. Here are the results.

Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WDC WD5000BEVT-55A0RT0
Unit Serial Number: WD-WX11EA022968
Firmware Number: 01.01A01
Capacity: 500.11 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: PASS
Test Time: 16:15:17, January 03, 2012

I ran Windows Memory Diagnostics and my memory is fine, too.

Open to more suggestions.
I should mention I haven't had this laptop a year yet so it's still under warranty, though I hope I can find the problem and fix it rather than send it to Sony and wait who knows how long.

Oh. I downloaded and ran Advanced System Care 5 somewhere around the time I began having troubles. I was afraid it may have messed too much with the registry, so I used the backup it made before it started, to restore the computer to where it was initially, but still have the same problems.
Thank you for any help you can give.

I have an update on my computer. Sony fixed the Vaio Care problem for me, so I can now get my Windows Updates.
One of the problems I still have left is the inability to save any file. When I try to save a document or picture, I get a "class not registered" error. Through some research I thought it might be a msxml problem, so I went to the uninstall menu, clicked on it to repair it and get this message: The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." Then " The path c:\6b433c94cc3afc132dc2a0c\msmxml.msi cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this locatin and try again, or try to find the installation packagage msxml.msi in a folder from which you can install the product MSXML 4.0 SP3 Parser. (KB973685)"
This message is for the supposed update, but I get a similar message for the msxml. I searched for the package but could not find it, even though it is listed in my programs for uninstalling.
I also cannot click on any links within my control panel and don't know whether it has anything to do with this msxml thing or not.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm not sure how to get to it. Vaio care is not showing an update available.

Have you ran any programs like CCleaner?

I have CCleaner, but haven't run it in 2-3 weeks probably. I did run Advanced System Care 5 somewhere around the time I began noticing problems. I thought it might have messed with the registry in a way that caused problems, so I restored it to a backup that Advanced System Care 5 made before it began, however the problems were still there.

At this point no telling what Advanced System Care did, I would completely reinstall your operating system.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:

Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.

Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.

Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.

Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.

The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

Wow. Wish I had come here and researched it before I used a registry cleaner. Thanks for the info. I made backup discs when I first got my computer, so I guess I'll take a deep breath and jump in. I appreciate your advice.

I did as suggested and reinstalled my system using hidden partition.
I have all the updates installed. I am now having a separate issue which I'll post in the Windows forum, but I wanted to thank you for your help and suggestion!
