So I got the XP Antispyware 2012 Virus on my computer. I went through the steps to remove the virus (FixNCR.reg, RKILL, TDSS rootkit infection removal then ran Malwarebytes) I went through all these steps from a flash drive downloaded from a clean computer because the infected computer could not and cannot access the internet. These steps seem to have removed the virus but I am still unable to access the internet. I have verified that all my connections are intact and that windows firewall is disabled, in fact it seems like it was already disabled and when i tried to enable the firewall i received a notice "Windows cannot start the windows firewall/Internet Connection Sharing ICS." I read a few other similar posts and it seems that the first step is to run the Farbar Service Scanner and post the log please see attached Farbar log. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

"The Coolest BC Computer" first and foremost you are a gentleman and a scholar. Secondly, sorry for attaching and not pasting FSS log, it will not happen again. My internet is now up and running, thank you so very much.... Side note, about 5 months ago my CD and DVD drive suddenly stopped working. After unsuccessfully trying to trouble shoot, I took my PC into a local PC repair shop. A kid in the shop said there was a registry error and resolved the issue in less than 5 minutes, to my surprise owner charged me $35 bucks. Point being, my CD and DVD driver are now once again not working and if I took my computer in especially before I received your much needed and gracious help i'd probably be a couple hundred in the hole(more than my computers worth). Could you be so kind as to help me with my other issues such as the cd/dvd drives and the others issues you mentioned in your previous post? Please see updated FSS log below..... I see you live in Daly City, My Dad is a seafood wholesaler in SF so if you ever need some lobsters or yellow tail or whatever at cost, I'd be glad to return a favor. Thanks again

Thank you for your kind words :)

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

===================================================================================

Now....

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=================================================================================

I will work on the DVD/CD right after i complete the 2 steps you told me to do. First is the Security Check. Please see the results below. "Side note" after my internet was restored and i sent you my first reply, I updated my malwarebytes and ran a full scan, the scan had 4 infections I clicked remove, once it was complete, i was then prompted to restart my computer which I did and now here i am again. Below the Security check log i will paste the malaware log that i just completed. Give me 5 minutes and i will then send registry editing log and results on CD/DVD drive...thank you so very much

Went thru the steps and I can now access windows firewall and security center and it seems to be working fine (any specific setting i should have?). I am now going to work on that CD/DVD issue right now and report back. In the process of trying to fix this computer back when the virus seemed to be irreversible, I deleted Avast anti-virus protection as a last ditch effort because i thought maybe the virus originated from Avast. Any recommendations for virus protection or should i re-install avast? I am also receiving when i re-boot Adobe reader, adobe flash and java updates are those safe to proceed with? Sorry I am a real novice when It comes to computers. Below is the updated FSS log report ..... Once again Thank You Thank You!!

Very well :)

Last checks....

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

======================================================================

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
    NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

Hello, I ran the aswMBR and have pasted the log below. I then ran the Temp File Cleaner which had me reboot after the Cleaner ran its course. Finally, I ran the ESET online scanner and there were no threats, therefore there is no log for that scan. Please see aswMBR log below. Thanks

Did you reinstall Avast?

Update Adobe Flash Player
Download the Latest Adobe Flash for Firefox and IE Without Any Extras: http://www.404techsupport.com/2010/04/27/download-the-latest-adobe-flash-for-firefox-and-ie-without-any-extras/

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

Your computer is clean Posted Image

1. We need to reset system restore to prevent your computer from being accidentally reinfected by using some old restore point(s). We'll remove all old restore points and create fresh, clean restore point.

Turn system restore off.
Restart computer.
Turn system restore back on.

If you don't know how to do it...
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405
Vista and Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-system-restore-in-windows-vista/

2. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.

3. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): http://www.mywot.com/. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.

4. Run Malwarebytes "Quick scan" once in a while to assure safety of your computer.

5. Run Temporary File Cleaner (TFC) weekly.

6. Download and install Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI): http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Run it weekly.

7. (optional) If you want to keep all your programs up to date, download and install FileHippo Update Checker.
The Update Checker will scan your computer for installed software, check the versions and then send this information to FileHippo.com to see if there are any newer releases.

8. When installing\updating ANY program, make sure you always select "Custom " installation, so you can UN-check any possible "drive-by-install" (foistware), like toolbars etc., which may try to install along with the legitimate program. Do NOT click "Next" button without looking at any given page.

9. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic2520.html

10. Except for MBAM and TFC, which are keepers you can simply delete all other tools we used as they don't install.

Hello, So i already re-installed Avast. Then I Download the Latest Adobe Flash for Firefox and IE Without Any Extras. When I tried to update Java it said I already had the latest version. I then unchecked the Java Quick Starter and then restarted my computer. I had some issues downloading Javara to my desktop it didnt give me an option it just automatically downloaded it. I finally got to the remove older versions and it did and printed a log that I will paste below. Should I proceed to creating new restore points? Just not sure if I completed this step accurately.
