Hello,

I just purchased a new PC with Windows 7 (64Bit) and already encountered a Rogue Trojan posing as a fake "Microsoft Antivirus 2012". I did not click anything and started to clean using malwarebytes, superantispyware, and Microsoft Security Essentials. I had literally just removed the preinstalled Mcafee software in favor of Microsoft Security Essentials. After updating and running all the programs I had thought everything was clean, though, I get some sort of Java(fake?) type of popup at startup. The popup just says Operation Error 1060 and is filled with characters that are not letters or numbers. Afterwards, MSE caught the same Trojan again so I'm assuming it is just reactivating. I followed the prep guide and will post the logs now. Thank you for your help!

Just to add on, I am getting what may be a system beep (windows) through my speaker. Considering this PC is BRAND new, I can't fathom it being a hardware/BIOS issue. It was going every 15 min or so for a little while today and I can't pinpoint it. It may be completely unrelated or have something to do with my settings on something, but figured it may be worth mentioning at least.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/436098 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello,

Same problem persists. I eventually cleared a Rogue trojan but get some odd pop ups at startup. My original post explains the problem still and a new DDS log is below. This is 64 bit windows so no GMER log.

Thanks!

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.

  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.

Your logs are clean. This will only clean your Java Cache.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

ClearJavaCache::

Save this as CFScript on your desktop.

Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Let me know what problem persists.
==

p.s.

Do you still see this error message.

The popup just says Operation Error 1060 and is filled with characters that are not letters or numbers.

This erro is described as:
ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST
1060 (0x424)
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Hello,

The error message does still appear during startup unfortunately. I turned off MSE and the Firewall when I got the prompt from ComboFix telling me to do so since I had turned them back on yesterday. I believe it ran correctly as noted in the Log. It's posted below.

On a side note, is having Java outdated the reason I got the Trojan in the first place? I have just made the switch to windows 7 and I got the Trojan within 2 days and I was not using any P2P or anything like that. I thought I was doing everything I was supposed to and just wondering where I might of went wrong.

Thanks again for your time and help!

On a side note, is having Java outdated the reason I got the Trojan in the first place?

There is no way to find out how you got infected.

We make it a point to ensure that you have the latest version of Java.

This erro is described as:
ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST
1060 (0x424)
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

We need to find out which service does not exist as an installed service.

These are the drivers and services I would like you to check. (The .sys files)

Do you still use this USB storage software?

Make sure you can see all hidden files.
Windows 7
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial151.html

Then search your computer for the files (.sys) and if not found make a note of it and let me know which ones are missing.
===

Open your task manager and under service disable all services listed that I have identified in bold above.

Restart the computer normally.
Do you still get the error message.

-I do use a portable HDD, but this does not look familiar to me: "S3 GeneStor;Genesys Logic Storage Driver;c:\windows\system32\DRIVERS\GeneStor.sys [x]"
I don't own a drive by that brand.

-After searching for the files, I actually found all of them. The only thing different is that there were 2 of this particular file:
"S1 BPntDrv;BPntDrv;c:\windows\system32\drivers\BPntDrv.sys [x]"

Lastly, not sure if I'm looking at these properly but I cannot find any of these in Task Manager - Service?

Please run this .bat file and reboot. Is the error message still generated at startup?

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files". Locate remove.bat on the Desktop and double-click on it to run it. A DOS box will open and close, that is normal.
If any errors errors encountered please post.
When done you can delete the remove.bat file.

p.s. On a Vista/Windows7 Operating System run the remove.bat file as Administrator.

Hello,

Ok, I ran the bat file as admin and the message still appears at startup. I also, for some reason, cannot connect to the internet either. All other devices that are wireless and/or hard lined to my router work except this pc. This started upon reboot. Did I inadvertently remove something?

Thanks,

Download this file to a CD or Flash drive using a good computer.
Copy the file on the desktop of the problem computer. Run it.

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Wow, ok after looking at my hardware devices, the Genesys USB 2.0 is actually my installed card reader. That is my mistake for not recognizing this. I see what happened though, the drivers are removed.

I'm sorry for not recognizing that.
