Hi, and thanks for checking this topic. Over the past week, I've noticed links in Firefox occasionally being redirected to a website called scour.com . My current AV (Sophos) program is only able to identify four 'suspicious' files, all of which are its own auto-update files. The program does not give the option to delete these. Malwarebytes does not identify any problem. Kaspersky's TDSS Killer didn't help. I'm guessing this is some type of rootkit, and using Sophos' Anti-Rootkit shows a number of them in my Temporary Internet Files for IE5 as well us the autoupdate files for Sophos AV.

Are these rootkits the issue, or am I missing something? If they are, what's the best way to get rid of them.

Here are some logs:

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Your "hosts" file has been hijacked.

Please, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034#FixItForMeAlways and click on "Fix it" button to reset your "hosts" file.

Then....

Open Notepad.
Paste the following text into it:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1         	localhost

Go File>Save As and...

1. Name the file hosts. (no extension; make sure there is just a "dot" at the end <--- VERY IMPORTANT!)
2. Make sure, "Save as type:" is set to "All Files (*.*)
3. File is saved to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder

After a day of use, I haven't noticed any redirects. However, I've tried three scans on my hard drive with Sophos AV, and each one eventually gets an "X encountered a problem and needs to shut down" message. The scans do turn up a trojan called Java DI-GG, which I've tried to remove each time with Sophos, but it reappears on each subsequent scan. Is there something more I could do?

I need exact info about that trojan.

Also....

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

I don't see much there....

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
