I removed a fake anti-virus with MBM and it destroyed my internet connection and I can't figure out how to fix it. I tried to replace the missing AFD file but it did not fix the connection.

fake anti-virus removed with MBAM
Now no internet connection

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Thanks for the help. This malware was kicking my butt. But I refuse to be defeated by malware.

I ran Combo fix. Combo fix said it detected Rootkit.zeroAccess! and it has installed to the TCP/ip stack. I assume that's why I don't have an internet connection. Then combo fix tells me there is no recovery console installed on this computer and it wants to go on the internet to download it. There is no internet conection so it fails the attempt to download the recovery console. Combo fix continues with a warning that it won't proform some important tasks. Combo fix continues... reboots and posts a log. I still have no internet connection.

OK... A little background. This is not my computer that we are working on. I remove malware for lots of people as a hobby and I learn more every time I do it. I never charge money for it. I enjoy the satisfaction that I get from saving peoples computer/information/money. Far to many people who can't afford it, buy new computers when they have a perfectly good computer that is setup wrong and clogged with malware. Plus it's means less toxic crap in the landfill.

Ok... 3 questions

1) I see it says don't attach any files. I read and tried to follow exactly the instructions for "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help" Was I not supposed to attach any files to this help request? or does that just mean from here on in the cleaning process don't attach files?

2) Can you tell from the logs if this malware destroyed the recovery console or was there never one installed on this computer?

3) I am useing a flash drive to move files to and from this computer because there is no internet connection on the infected computer. Is there a danger that I will infect my computer from the flash drive and how do I clean my flash drives so that I don't get cross contamination?

Thanks again for the assistance and here is the Combo fix log

Hello

1.just mean from here on in the cleaning process don't attach files.

2.there never one installed on this computer

3. http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/downloads/usbvaccine/

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

4. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.
5. From the General tab (Vista/7 users: Networking tab), click Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties

8. Still in Control Panel double click on "Internet options" then "Connections" tab then "LAN Settings" button. Make sure "Automatically detect settings" is checked.
If you made any changes OK your way out.
Restart computer.

------------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 minute. At the same time disconnect ethernet cable as well.
Reconnect everything.
Restart computer.

------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

---------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista and 7, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Restart computer.

-------------------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista and 7), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

----------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista and 7)
Restart computer, and check again.

-------------------------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista and 7):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.

Hello

here is what I want you to try next

1. Locate the file - C:\Windows\inf\Nettcpip.inf
  • It's important that you first make a copy of the file. Place the copy on your Desktop.
  • Once you have done that, use Notepad open the original file for editing.

Posted Image

2. Locate the [MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall] section.

3. Edit the Characteristics = 0xa0 entry and replace 0xa0 with 0×80.

Posted Image

4. Save the file, and then exit Notepad.

Posted Image

5. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.

Posted Image Posted Image

6. On the General tab, click Install, select Protocol, and then click Add.

Posted Image

7. In the Select Network Protocols window, click Have Disk.

Posted Image

8. In the Copy manufacturer’s files from: text box, type c:\windows\inf, and then click OK.

Posted Image

9. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.

Posted Image

Note This step will return you to the Local Area Connection Properties screen, but now the Uninstall button is available.

10. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Uninstall, and then click Yes.

11. It is important that you restart the computer to complete the uninstall.

------------

Step #2 - Reinstall of TCP/IP

Posted Image

Take the nettcpip.inf which you have earlier copied to Desktop. Move it back to the directory C:\Windows\INF\ overwriting the existing copy. The file shall now look exactly like the sample above.

Redo sub-steps 4-11 to re-install TCP/IP

I followed those instructions... still no internet connection.

After:

I went into control panel\admin tools\services. I right clicked DHCP and brought up the properties.
I didn't change anything. I just wanted to see if the dependant files were present under the dependancy tab. It appears to me that it was ok.. ADF, netbios, and Tcp/ip were all there. But while I was there I noticed that the DHCP client was stopped. A couple of lines lower and the DNS client was also stopped. I clicked the start button on the DHCP client and it gave me...

Error 1068: dependency service or group failed to start. I backed out and didn't do anything else there.

I went into MSconfig to see if these clients were checked under the services tab. They are both checked but they are both showing stopped in msconfig. I didn't mess with anything in msconfig.

I hope this info helps.

Thanks so much for the help.

I've got a couple of long days at work so I won't be able to sit down and dig into this again until friday night or saturday morning. I'll let you know then how this fix works out.
