I have recently had trouble with an Expiro.X infection on my Vista laptop. I have received some excellent help from boopme on the "Am I infected?" board, but have now been recommended to come to this board to get help checking for exe damage. There are lots of details of what's been happening and the help that boopme has already given me on my earlier thread, here.

Thank you so much for your help.

Here is my DDS.txt:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. [/b]
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi myrti

Thanks for your reply. The laptop is running very slowly, but erratically so. Sometimes it seems to be normal, but it sort of gets stuck for a while every so often, and everything goes at a snail's pace for an unspecified time, and then eventually carries on. This particularly applies to F-Prot, which is fine for the first hour or so of scanning, and then slows the computer right down, sometimes hanging it altogether. The last time it tried to do a full scan, it started off fine, but was making hardly any progress at all, and I finally shut the laptop down when it still hadn't finished (and was barely responding) after 31 hours. If I abort the scan, it returns to near normal operation. It did the "not responding" thing for a while when I was running OTL, too, but sorted itself out and carried on after a while.

Anyway, here are the files that OTL created are below.

I am hugely grateful for your help with this. Thank you so much.

Hi,

have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling F-Prot? It sounds as if it might be the culprit.

Do you konw if your PC is running hot?

Thanks myrti

By "hot" do you mean physically getting very warm as it runs? If so then, no, it's not doing that.

I've uninstalled and re-downloaded F-Prot and reinstalled it. It's doing a full scan now. It's the same as before. The first hour and a half or so is fine - the computer is very marginally slower to respond to some things, but entirely usable without any inconvenience caused by F-Prot running. Then it suddenly goes unusably slow - as in takes several minutes to respond to a mouse click. It is currently scanning a file that it lists as
C:\Windows\winsxs\msil_system.windows.forms_b7...\System.Windows.Forms.dll
(Sorry it's not showing me the full path)
It's been scanning this one file for at least half an hour - ie approximately since the time it suddenly slowed down. At one point it slowed down to the extent that F-Prot's own timer stopped ticking over for several minutes, but after a bit it started going again. (I am posting this from a different machine, obviously.)
I think (though I am not absolutely certain) that it has got stuck on this file on previous scans. I am quite sure, though, that this is not the only file that it's done it with.

Thanks again for your help.

Lydia

Hi,

if your PC is not running hot, then you may have an issue with the drive. I doubt this is due to malware.

Run CHKDSK to check for disk errors

  • Click Start and type cmd and then hit enter.
  • At the command prompt, type the following command chkdsk c: /f /r and then press Enter.
  • If you are prompted to schedule CHKDSK to run the next time the computer restarts (because CHKDSK may be unable to gain exclusive access to the drive under Windows), type the following text y, and then press Enter.
  • At the command prompt, type exit and then press Enter.
  • Restart your computer. While Windows is loading, CHKDSK should automatically run and check the drive that you specified earlier.
This process can take up to an hour!
  • When all is one and you are back into normal mode click Start and type eventvwr and then hit enter.
  • Once Event Viewer is open, select Windows logs => Application => The 3th column of information in the right-hand pane is titled Source, click on the word Source at the top of the column to sort by that column.
  • Scroll through the Source column to find the most recent entry titled Chkdsk
  • Double-click Chkdsk to open the CHKDSK results.
  • Click on the Copy button and post the result in your next reply.

Hi myrti

When I try to run chkdsk, it says:

Access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges.
You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.

I am logged in as an administrator, so I don't know what it means by "elevated mode".

It does now seem warmer than before, but not excessively hot on the left hand side. (It's a laptop.) I imagine running F-Prot for a couple of hours might use the HDD a lot and warm it up perhaps?

Thanks again,
Lydia

Hi

Go to start, then all programs followed by Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

This will open an elevated command prompt.

Into that window please type:

chkdsk c: /f /r and hit enter.
The empty spaces are important, please copy the line as is.

That should work.

Thank you.

I ran chkdsk. It took ages, but eventually finished. :) However, when I used eventvwr, I selected Windows Logs and Application, and sorted by the source column, but I didn't find anything in the source column that said chkdsk at all - nothing between CertificateServicesClient and Customer Experience Improvement Program. (Ch should come between Ce and Cu, right?)

Anyway, while it was verifying everything, it seemed to get stuck a few times - mainly just before it said it had found a problem - but just in case it crashed, I decided to write down some of what it said onscreen, which I've reproduced below. Unfortunately it finished rather quickly, so I didn't get the end bit. But it did finish, and then it started the computer up, and then just as Windows was finishing booting, it went back to the chkdsk screen briefly to tell me that it had checked the disk and it was clean, and then it reverted to the normal desktop.

Regards,
Lydia

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

A disk check has been scheduled.
Windows will now check the disk.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)...
263232 file records processed.
File verification completed.
891 large file records processed
0 bad file records processed
0 EA records processed
108 reparse records processed
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 5)...
318592 index entries processed
Index verification completed
0 unindexed files processed
CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 5)...
263232 security descriptors processed
Security descriptor verification completed
27681 data files processed
CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal...
34012912 USN bytes processed
Usn Journal verification completed
CHKDSK is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5)...
Windows replaced bad clusters in file 31
of name \$Extend\$RmMetadata\$TxfLog\$Tops

It then listed 9 other files that it said it had replaced bad clusters in. I can't remember all of what came next, but I do know it said stage 5 of 5 was checking free space, and it completed that and then found some things that were something but allocated as something else - it was only onscreen very briefly, so that's all I can remember. Sorry.

Hi,

was one of the 9 files it found the one you remember FProt becoming so slow on? Could you try to have it scan again adn see if this resolved the issue (if not just abort the scan)

Yes it was one of the files that it said it was fixing.
F-Prot has just finished its full scan in just over an hour and a half. It hasn't done it that quickly for quite a while - since before I started noticing how long it was taking, anyway.
Wow!
Thank you so much.

Is there anything else in any of the logs I've posted in this thread or my previous one that indicates a problem that needs dealing with, or am I sorted now?

Thank you.

Hi,

no as far as I have seen things look clean.

Read those last few lines, in order to keep your pc safe and clean:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
    • Download OTC from the following mirror and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on Posted Image
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  • If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :(.
