Happy New Year!

Dell PC became flooded with pop ups from the Win 7 Security 2012 (how nice of them to change the year so timely) virus. I had the boyfriend shut down and I rebooted in safe mode with networking. I ran a Malwarebytes scan and it quarantined 10 infected items. I had Malwarebytes remove them then rebooted into normal mode. So far, the pop ups have not re-appeared, however no executable files are working. Grrrr.

When I had a virus a few weeks ago on my laptop that started with the win 7 security 2011, then became a different one in my assembly folders, McAfee was infected and corrupt. I can't tell at this point if that is the case, my gut says yes. But so far the firewall is on and so is realtime scanning. I do remember we had many issues with McAfee interfering with removal of whatever extra gems from this virus, and I've already told the boyfriend I will be uninstalling McAfee very soon and the computer will be out of commission until we have the all clear. There was grumbling and nashing of teeth, but alas he understands his Mafia Wars will have to live without him for a while lol.

He runs a 64 bit so there will be no GMER log however I've pasted the DDS log, and the Malwarebytes Log below. Attach log is attached. Happy code hunting and thank you so much for your help!!

Hello and welcome back. Please follow these guidelines while we work on your PC:
  • Malware removal is a sometimes lengthy and tedious process. Please stick with the thread until Iíve given you the ďAll clear.Ē Absence of symptoms does not mean your machine is clean!
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications without being directed to do so.
  • Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
Posted Image Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me! Combofix log is below. I was a bit worried I was going to have to try and remember how to get to the file on my flash drive through the dos prompt. But explorer was able to run from the pop up box generated when the flash drive was put into the usb. Otherwise, no other executable files work.

I didn't uninstall mcafee yet, but will as soon as you say to do so. It of course isn't playing nice with combofix.

One more piece of info. Two times Keith has gone to this television fanatic site and two times he's gotten a virus. The first was the av protection one back in november and now this one. Only mentioning it since I see it saying hello on the combofix log lol.

Please do this now:

Posted Image Please download ExeFix.scr by Farbar and save it to a flashdrive or on the root of the system drive (usually C:).
  • Important: Boot your computer into the account that has trouble running exe files.
  • Run the tool.
  • The tool notifies you within a fraction of a second to reboot the computer, please do so.
  • Please tell me if you are now able to run programs.
Note: If the tool did not run you may change the extension to .com or .bat or .cmd or .pif
Also note that in order the fix to work you need to be booted to the user account that has trouble running exe files.

If you are still not able to run exe's stop and let me know - If you are, do this also:

Posted Image You have this program installed, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Please update it and run a scan.

Open MBAM
  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • The program will close to update and reopen.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Uncheck any entries from C:\System Volume Information or C:\Qoobox
  • Make sure that everything else is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Please include the following in your next post:

Couple other things I remembered. McAfee firewall was turning itself off prior to my disabling it for these scans. Confirmed my suspicion that it is corrupt. My fear is that if not fully cleaned off h. is system, a trailer of this virus will remain. If I recall correctly, you linked me to a place that would help to fully uninstall McAfee.

The other thing was a few days prior to his getting this virus Facebook locked him out of his account saying he had possible malware and to run a scan and once it was clean he would be allowed to log in again. They provided one link for Windows another for Mac users to run a scan. I didn't let Keith use either link, actually considering maybe that itself was a virus (I'm paranoid now). We instead ran scans in McAfee and Malwarebytes but they were both clean. But a new toolbar, Inbox Toolbar, was on his computer and changed his default home page. I changed the default homepage back to the one Keith wanted thinking he didn't uncheck a box when installing it. However 5 minutes later Keith said a box popped up saying a program had tried to change the homepage but it blocked it. I went back to his computer and Inbox had changed the homepage to itself again. I read up a bit on that thing and uninstalled it. I didn't seem to have trouble uninstalling it like others (or so I thought) but maybe this in itself was the virus? Now that I've typed all of that I hope it is useful. If not, I apologize for providing too much info.

As always thank you for your patience and thoroughness with me. Sad to know that I'm the smarter one in this house when it comes to computers. It's a wonder we have anything that runs at all lol.

Hi,

Let's see if we can nuke that unwanted toolbar. Please run DDS again and post only the DDS.txt log.

Hola!

Registry fix done, glad you found that thing! Running ESET now on his pc and will post the log in an hour or so, whenever it is finished. : )

Another thing to contemplate that I noticed early this morning. In the past few days I have only turned on his pc to do these various logs and scans. I have shut it down each time in between uses and every time it has one update. My laptop however hasn't had any updates in the past few days and I find it suspicious that his pc would have different updates. Possibly virus related?

Back in a bit.

Hi,

What exactly is updating when you turn the computer on? It sounds normal, but I need a little more information to say for sure. Those ESET detections are both false positives. Are there any remaining problems that we have not addressed?

The update occurs when shutting down. It's indicated by an exclamation point next to the word shut down. Isn't that a Windows update? It only says 1 of 1 not a specific list.

His McAfee is still shutting off the firewall by itself. Time I guess to uninstall McAfee, install Norton, then let him use the pc to see how it is working.

Oops, ok the firewall right now isn't the reason for the pop up saying his computer was at risk. I forgot I had to turn the real time scanning back on. So, for the moment McAfee may be alright.

Update, McAfee firewall did turn itself off. I have uninstalled it through control panel, and then also used the removal tool you provided me in the last thread.

The update you describe is a legitimate Windows update. If everything else seems to be in order all I have left for you is some very important cleanup:

Posted Image Your Adobe reader needs to be updated. Please visit Adobe's site and grab the newest version. Be sure to watch for and uncheck any boxes offering to install other software.

Posted Image Uninstall ComboFix
  • Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard or click Start -> Run. Copy and past the following text into the run box that opens and press OK:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Posted Image

Posted Image Delete the following tools along with any other logs you saved from our work:
  • DDS
Posted Image Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
Please post once more so I know you are all set and I can mark this thread resolved. Good luck and stay safe!
