I have upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard. I have Word for MAC2004 which is unsupported by Lion. Can I access my word documents and if so how?

Just go with some free office supported on Lion and you should be fine. Otherwise your only choice is to upgrade to Office2011. I would recommend so, it is a pretty new office suite.
