My daughter's laptop had an infection of "XP Home Security 2012". She had tried various things before giving it to me with a plea for help. Between the malware and her attempts to fix it, it was pretty badly messed up. I tried using the Manual Uninstall Guide on these pages, with little success. In particular, FixNCR.reg did not seem to restore the .EXE association, and so it was not possible to run the tools for the manual removal.

During this entire process, I remained disconnected from the internet.

I had a recent system image of C: so I juet restored the image. Then, because the manual removal instructions mentioned rootkits and running tdsskiller.exe, I did that. It found (and fixed) Win32.sinowal.knf.

A second run of tdsskiller.exe showed no threats found.

Just to be sure the Win32.sinowal.knf had not altered anything on C:, I restored the system image of C: again. Another run of tdsskiller.exe showed no threats found.

System: XP Home SP3 with all updates installed.

One of the preliminary tests requested by Broni in "Am I Infected" showed:

Disk \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 malicious Win32:MBRoot code @ sector 312576708

Now posted here at instructions of Broni, with these logs:

DEFOGGER: run successfully

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

1. Combofix ran without problems and without rebooting.

2. The computer seems to be working normally now. When Broni looked at the initial logs I posted in "Am I infected", he was concerned about the entry:
Disk \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 malicious Win32:MBRoot code @ sector 312576708

Combofix log:

I did NOT click the FIX button of aswMBR.

Re-Run aswMBR

  • Click Scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the FIXMBR button
  • There is a slight pause after clicking the 'Fix' button.
  • Wait for the tool to report 'Infection fixed successfully', now reboot the machine.
  • Rebooting the machine prematurely, before seeing this line will result in an incomplete fix.

Note:After the 'Infection fixed successfully' message appears, the machine may became unresponsive. You may have to do a hard boot of your machine. That may be a side effect from the fix. All will be well after the reboot.
  • Save the log as before and post in your next reply.

OK, the instructions are somewhat contradictory, but after the scan, the FIXMBR button was grayed out and the FIX button was active, so that is the one I used.

I waited for the 'Infection fixed successfully' to appear, then saved the log and rebooted (without problems) to the normal Windows desktop.

Greetings

That looks good, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Java installed without incident.

TFC run without incident

MBAM updated & run without incident, "No malicious items detected"

Hijack This run without incident.

The computer seems to be running normally, except that it seems slow to bootup and slow to bring up programs, especially Internet Explorer. And, in entering this message, the word wrap seems messed up. At the end of a line, and randomly, the cursor jumps to another line.

Also, the Microsoft Security Essentials icon does not show up in the task bar, even though it is running and enabled.

Hello

I want you to reset the DMA you can do this by this script here - Reset DMA

If you have problems when you click on the link try to right click on the link and select "Save Target As" and then save to your desktop.
Once it is on your desktop right click on the file and select "Run"

If you still can't run it then you can go here "Reset DMA" to see what I want to do

let me know if this helps the bootup

Good call on that one! I looked before resetting, andthe IDE channel for the hard drive was set to PIO and, after resetting, is set to Ulrea DMA 5.

Bootup now takes about 30 seconds from power-on to the login screen, and about 1:45 from selecting the user until the desktop is fully loaded. My daughter is the regular user of the computer, so I don't have a feel for how normal that time is, but this is faster than before.

The MS Security Essentials icon is now back. I think TFC may have terminated the program when it ran.

The major wierdness right now is the cursor randomly moving to another line when I am typing something. This happened three times during the typing of this short message, for instance.
