Hello,

My sister in law just purchased a new computer. She knows nothing about firewalls or anti virus programs. So, my idea is to install a good firewall and anti virus program for her. My question is this can I download a firewall and anti virus program from my computer onto a CD and then install them on the new computer?

Yes you can, however, once installed the AV will not have its latest signatures (the malware detection database) and it will need Internet access to update itself.
A couple of AV companies give you the option to download the signatures too.

And pay attention not to downlod a web install, but a full install program. Web install programs are small and download the necessary files when you run it. Microsoft has several web install programs.

Since it is a new computer most likely with Windows 7, there is always the option to use Windows built-in Firewall so there would be no need to download a replacement.

Thanks for the info. Another question that comes to mind is that my sister in law knows basically nothing about PC's. Can you recommend a website or book that would teach her the ABC's of computer usage (i.e. computer functions, security, safe web browsing, etc.)one website that I found was GrassRootsDesign.com. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

the best to you
