Hello,

My computer (running Windows XP Professional) became infected with XP Antivirus 2012. I ran the fixes described here at bleeping computer and malewarebytes found three files that it removed. However, after the fix I was unable to run many exe programs. When I go to start microsoft excel, outlook, acrobat reader, my anitvirus software, or even the Windows Firewall, I get a message requesting a program to open the exe file. These programs seem to run fine in safemode with the exception of google chrome which doesn't run even in safemode. I ran dds with no problem but about 40 minutes into the gmer scan the computer said it had run into a problem the screen turned blue and lines of text scrolled up then the computer shut down. So here I am. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Here is my DDS log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please do the following:

Step # 1 Download and run DDS

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Step # 2: Download and Run Gmer

Please download gmer.zip from Gmer and save it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOTKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No.

If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure that the 'Sections' button is ticked and the 'Show All' button is unticked.
  • Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
  • Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. The two DDS Logs (DDS and Attach.txt)
2. The GMER Log

Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

Okay, I thought I had finished off the virus but then today started having trouble again. Steps I have taken so far include implementing all of the steps in the solution posted on bleepingcomputer (twice). Then restoring my computer and runing malewarebytes which seemed to have worked until today. My computer will start up in normal mode but will crash as soon as I try to do anything. Seems to work okay in safe mode. I have not been able to download GMER yet (it stalls about 75% of the way through the download) but will try on another computer and will upload as soon as I can. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Here are my DDS scans from today:

I have not been able to download GMER yet (it stalls about 75% of the way through the download) but will try on another computer and will upload as soon as I can.

If you have any problems with downloading/running GMER or posting its log, let me know and we'll try a different rootkit scanner.

I'd also like for you to do the following:

Step # 1 Download and Run CKScanner.exe

Download CKScanner from here:http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/CKScanner.exe
Important - Save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
A message box will verify the file saved.
Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

GMER finished but did not find anything. I saved the log but it is a blank document so there is nothing to paste.

The other program log is here:

CKScanner - Additional Security Risks - These are not necessarily bad
scanner sequence 3.MN.11.PJAPUS
----- EOF -----

I started computer in normal mode this morning and it was extremely slow. It also told me my Kapersky virus software had expired but the renewal date is not until August. So, there is definately something wrong.

I will try to run GMER again in normal mode if you think that might help.

Thank you!

Go ahead and try it. If you get no log/a blank log from GMER, then we'll try another rootkit scanner.

Well, after trying a few times I have given up on running gmer in normal mode. Normal mode starts up (very slowly) but after that the computer basically doesn't work. I went to open gmer and it would not start after 45 minutes. This was also true for every other program I tried to start even including task manager. So,I back to using the computer only in safe mode. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Let's try another rootkit scanner in place of GMER. Since you have a hard time running things in Normal Mode, go ahead and try running in Safe Mode and see if you get a log.

Step # 1: Download and Run RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Good news. I was able to get a report from the new scanner. I was able to run it in normal mode under a different profile. Here are the results:

If all possible, run ComboFix in Normal Mode (using your main profile). If you can't get it to run in Normal Mode, then go ahead and boot your computer into Safe Mode and run ComboFix from there.

Step # 1: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

*Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please post C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

It ran all the way through but it would only run under one profile. Thank you! Here is the combofix log:

Step # 1 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u30.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Remove the following old versions of Java:

  • Java™ 6 Update 22

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 2 Download and Run CCleaner

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the ccsetup.exe file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location.
  • Under Install Options, choose all the default settings except I would recommend that you unclick/untick install the Yahoo! Toolbar, unless you want it. You can also Uncheck the 'Automatically check for updates' box.
  • Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Step # 3 Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
  • Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • You can also access the log by doing the following:
  • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
  • Click on the Logs tab.
  • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
  • Click Open.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

  • First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Adobe Reader 9.4.7.
  • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
  • On the right Untick McAfee® Security Scan Plus if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
  • Click the Continue button
  • Click Run, and click Run again
  • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe Reader X (10.1.1) is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 5.1.4 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/index.php

If you decide to install Foxit 5.1.4 instead of Adobe, do the following during Foxit's Setup/Installation process:

Uncheck the following boxes:

I accept the License Terms and want to install Foxit Toolbar

Make Ask.com my default search

Create desktop, quick launch and start menu icon to eBay

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista/Windows 7 users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here to run the scan.

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. ESET Log
2. How is your computer doing, any problems?
