Posted 29 December 2011 - 01:47 PM

The following was copied from the post that I placed on McAfee's user forum.

"I have been looking for days and can't find a solution to my problem. I guess thats the problem with forum sites sometimes.

Anyway, on December 12 I was shopping online. I typed "www.bedbathbeyond.com" in my Firefox browser, which is apparently not bed bath and beyond's correct web address. A pop-up came on the screen that said something about being the millionth visitor to the site that day and "Click here" to claim your prize. I knew this was a farce, so I tried to exit the software but couldnt do anything until the popup was gone, so I control-alt-deleted and closed firefox from the task manager. I logged back in and continued my shopping with no issues, and was quite pleased with my progress. The next day, my wife restarted the computer in the morning and tried to log in, but it took forever to boot into windows and to the log in screen for our user profiles. She left and went to work. Later in the day ( I had no idea she'd experienced a problem) I attempted to log in to my profile and the computer took over 20 minutes to do anything. Just kept saying "loading user preferences" or something to that effect. I did a hard shut down and tried to reboot. Took almost a half hour to even boot to the windows log in screen.

I then booted into safe mode and when mcafee total security opened up, it said that the computer was at risk because real time scanning was turned off. I repeatedly tried turning it on, but it keeps turning itself off. I managed to get it to run a full scan but mcafee found no infected files. I downloaded and ran Stinger twice and it also found no infected files.

I tried to log in normally again after a reboot, but after the 20 minutes it took to get to the log in screen again and after I entered my login info (fingerprint scanner says it is disconnected?), it seemed as if my user profile did not even exist as the wallpaper was toshiba satellite background and it was trying to load user setting for internet explorer 6??? I turned the computer off and scratched my head.

I have a toshiba satellite running windows xp. I have no idea what is going on or where to start. I'm frustrated because I feel like McAfee let something through that infected my system."

After posting this, I ran malwarebytes and it found and quarantined 3 files. Unfortunately, I can neither locate or remember the names of the files. One was a trojan.

Also, the problem with the corrupted user profile settings is isolated to my account because my wife's appears to still be intact, although the computer is still extremely slow when attempting to log in under her account. Of course my account was the administrator account! Lovely! I was advised to download hijackthis and post the log here for analysis, which I am attaching along with the files your site requested. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/435190 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer! :)

I am Blind Faith and I will be helping you out with your problem. Firstly, you should know that we are working with specific tools which are destined to idetifying the possible threats present on your system so I will analyze the results they produce.

As a start we need to have some more up-to-date logs than the ones you have already provided. The current state of the files on your system might have changed so we need to get a clear look on that step. DO NOT bring any changes to the system except the ones I tell you to as that may produce more damage than helping us.

If you will encounter a delay of over 2 days from me, please don't hesitate and private message me.
Do not forget to check your topic periodically and subscribe to the topic so that you can receive notifications regarding my replies.

Please generate another DDS log (download it from here if you haven't already) and post it in your next reply along with other changes that may have occured since you last posted.
Also download and run GMER from this link: GMER download link.

Thank you very much for your patience.

Regards,

Elle

Hey, I just received your reply but am not in a position to run those logs at the moment. Does it matter that the laptop was shut down right after I ran and posted the initial logs here? I haven't even tried to turn it on or use it since requesting help on the 29th.

Alright, so I ran the scans you requested and am attaching the logs here. As far as I know, there have been no changes to my situation because I have not turned on the computer. I have also not requested any assistance from any other sites nor have I attempted to fix anything on my own. As impatient as I normally am, I have been waiting patiently and have followed the instructions for this forum to the letter.

Thank you in advance for your assistance. I eagerly anticipate a resolution to this problem. My wife does as well, since we have been without a home computer for almost a month now.

Hi there,

Thank you for providing the log. Even if the situation doesn't seem to have changed, malware nowadays is very unpredictable therefore we need up-to-date logs. :) I will come back with further instructions as soon as possible.

Hi there,

Please go to Start->Run and type %AppData%\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs inside the popped-up box.
A window should appear with several MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware logs. As you can see their format is mbam-log-date (time).txt
Please select the latest one and copy/paste it in your next reply.

well, unfortunately, I cannot retrieve the logs you requested. When I attempted to perform the actions you suggested, I received a response that said "windows cannot find C:\documents. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search." When I tried to search for the logs, I was unable to locate them.

Hi there,

Then please open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and choose the Logs tab.
As you can see their format is mbam-log-date (time).txt
Please post the last three logs (excluding the latest one which is clean).

I am unable to use the computer in anything other than safe mode. When I open the log tab there is nothing there.

Well let's see...I attempted to boot the computer normally (not in safe mode) to attempt to find the log files you asked for. After about 30 minutes of the system setting up user preferences, a system configuration utility started running on its own and I couldn't do anything to stop it. So I did a hard shutdown. Now I can't get online in safe mode. Any suggestions?

Hi there,

Firstly I would like you to answer to several questions in order to go further.

1. Do you still have your Windows installation CD in reach ?
2. Do you have a clean computer on which you can transfer our tools and use it when needed?

I have the toshiba recovery and applications/drivers DVD. When I try to go to your site from my work computer though, Internet explorer locks up. I will try to load Firefox to that computer and see if I can get on that way. I won't be able to do that for a few hours though. Let you know as soon as I know more.

Elle,

Good news for a change! I was able to load Firefox and get to your site from the work computer. I eagerly await your instructions!
