Often my laptop will not recognize all the memory in it, and will also knock down the processor speed when viewing the information throught the control panels system information. However the bios always displays the correct information. I've tried changing out sticks and slots and still intermittently the correct specs do not display under the control panel. But after rebooting the computer it will often show different information under the system info.I know my motherboard supports up to 512 mb and i only have (2) 128 mb sticks in it. I would like to upgrade the memory on this but am afraid it's going to be a waste if windows isn't even going to recognize it all.

Also not sure if this is related but often after rebooting it will have the windows firewall disabled, but if i reenable and then reboot it's disabled again.

Any advice would be great appreciated!

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Remember that since this is a laptop all devices are integrated.
The system is using some of your memory for video, sound, network devices etc.

How much memory does the system icon in control panel report?
In the beginning there was the command line.

Get Memtest and test the memory.

My first thought is that one stick is not seated properly or is bad
In the beginning there was the command line.

Ok now it's not recognizing anything in the 2nd bank at all, i've tried several different sticks. Is it common for one bank to go bad? Way to test that? Also the biggest stick i can find of pc100 is 256, can I somehow update the mobo to accept pc133?

thanks everyone

PC133 is a common substitute for PC100, no need to update anything.

You've tried all sticks in all slots...and nothing works in this particular bank, eithe individually or when paired?

ok now it's still seeing the 2nd stick of 128 periodically. How do I know how much memory memtest is seeing? Cause so far it's passed with no errors but I believe its only seeing the one 128 mb stick.

Also it won't boot with a stick in the one bank only. even with different sticks. Also my antivirus and firewall keep turning off from time to time.

Tried a pc133 stick and it won't even boot up.

How many passes has Memtest done ??
It usually takes about 8 or 10 to fully test -

Try using a sprits of compressed air in the slot you hare having problems with to clean out any dust.
Might be a bad connection and certainly cant hurt.
In the beginning there was the command line.
