A few days ago while online MS Security Essentials popped up (it runs real time as my AV program) and warned me of detecting the above trojan. I was not visiting any unsafe or unknown sites at the time to the best of my knowledge. I clicked the REMOVE option and it was successfully removed according to MSSE. HOWEVER, I am wondering if we shouldn't take a look at some logs and have an expert see if I appear clean or if there is any evidence to suggest further action. After the removal I ran full scans with MBAM, SAS and Webroot SpySweeper and all came up clean.

The PC has seemed a little slow and unstable at times but this is probably nothing and isn't unusual, when my kids play online games with my ancient graphics card it causes problems. Also I'm concerned because my outbound firewall (Online Armor) has been disabled, Windows firewall only, because the OA firewall was becoming a pain. They have since announced a newer SIMPLER version that doesn't require constant user decisions so maybe I'll try that, however if any malware is trying to phone home I guess there's nothing stopping it? I figured if the PC was clean the inbound firewall was good enough (until this incident). Apparently this is a recent threat as there aren't many hits for it when doing a web search other then MS identifying it as a severe threat.

Lastly, I was concerned when I investigated the filepath of the trojan and found a huge hierarchy of file folders within folders in the cache section of Firefox, each containing 1 file (ex: 0 thru 9 then A thru F, each of these containing another 6-12 folders). One of these folders is where the trojan resided. Maybe these folders are normal but I had something similar once before with a malware infection and am naturally suspicious. MSSE doesn't have an option to save or export a scan log but here is the file path of the deleted threat: C:\Documents and Settings\Amy Meechan\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\rzv73fdh.default\Cache\0\F7\14BE7d01

Thanks for any help or suggestions,
Kevin M

ADDITIONAL STRANGE PC BEHAVIOR TODAY:
The MSN (IE8) browser is becoming frequently unstable, freezing, crashing, taking forever to load e-mail pages or websites, losing all of it's stored e-mails and taking 20 minutes to restore the e-mail folders/messages. probably a browser issue but just thought I'd mention it. Firefox seems fine.

Also upon a reboot I got a mssg from MS Security Essentials (AV) that said it was disabled because the service had been stopped, I had to click to restart the service. This has never happened before. It has been running fine since then.

Lastly, as I mentioned in the first post I have had Online Armor firewall disabled (in SERVICES) and using Windows firewall. I thought I'd turn on OA instead to make sure there was no unwanted outbound traffic and it showed a mssg that said it was unable to load. I haven't run it in months so who knows, maybe just an issue of being out of date, I can try downloading the latest version.

ONE MORE UPDATE: Probably unrelated but thought I'd mention this as well since my PC is doing a lot of strange things the last few days. Now my audio is messed up, sounds (windows system sounds, Itunes music, streaming radio) are distorted and "crackly" and it seems to be related to the PC itself not speakers since when this happens the music also slows down.

P.S. upon another reboot I got the same warning from MSSE that the service had stopped but I didn't click on the start option this time and it started on it's own anyway. Again probably nothing but it never did this before when restarting.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/435140 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

UPDATE 1/4: The MSN browser issues are resolved, corrupted program, it has been reinstalled. Online Armor firewall was reinstalled and is currently enabled, no suspicious traffic. Audio still messed up, I'll do a separate post for help with this. Per the HelpBot's instructions I will re-post all the required logs now, please advise if you think any additional action is necessary to ensure a clean PC.

Thanks!

HELP BOT REQUESTED LOGS:

I was unable to do a second GMER scan, I started a scan last night and left it and went to bed. This morning the PC wouldn't "wake up" from stand by mode,I had to restart, got a mssg that it had encountered a "serious error" that may be driver related. I restarted GMER and get an error mssg "LOAD DRIVER: (FILE PATH) pxtdapod.sys error 0xC0000034 Access is Denied". I deleted and re downloaded GMER (same version from the ZIP link), the same thing happened.
here is the session log from Webroot Spysweeper during this time frame after I ran GMER last night in case there is any useful information here, the first item about a BHO allowed happened by itself, I was asleep and didn't allow anything.

It appears that Online Armor firewall may have been blocking the GMER scan the second time, let me know if you'd like me to try again with the FW disabled

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I Close My Topics If You Have Not Replied In 5 Days If You Will Be Longer Please Let Me Know

If I Have Not Replied To One Of My Topics In 48 Hrs Please Bump The Topic

Below is the Combofix log. PC seems fine other than audio problem which I posted under hardware. Again, I just wanted an expert to take a look to see if further action was warranted. FYI during the scan I got one error mssg: "pev.3XE has encountered an error and needs to close". I clicked on don't send error report and the scan continued.

Hello

try this and see if it clears up the audio

I want you to reset the DMA you can do this by this script here - Reset DMA

If you have problems when you click on the link try to right click on the link and select "Save Target As" and then save to your desktop.
Once it is on your desktop right click on the file and select "Run"

If you still can't run it then you can go here "Reset DMA" to see what I want to do

Gringo, Thanks! That fixed the audio issue. It seems to have spead up the PC as well, which would make sense after reading this tutorial. I did it manually, however, as I am hands on and I don't know how to "run" a written script, do I copy the text into a command prompt window or something? Also, as he showed in the tutorial the primary IDE channel was on PIO current transfer mode and after 2 reboots was on ultra DMA 5. However, the secondary IDE channel remained on PIO and didn't ask me to reboot, I rebooted anyway but still on PIO even though it's says use DMA if available. Would this indicate DMA is not available for the secondary channel? Or is this a question for another forum like hardware? Maybe there's a problem with my CD-RW OR DVD optical drives? I wonder because for a while there has been a DIFFERENT audio issue (which still remains) with audio CD playback only, which is a (for lack of a better term) "skipping" sound. Maybe I'll just replace the CD drive.

Thanks again

Hello

I was reading the first part of the tutorial

"The only option for the user who wants to enable DMA mode is to uninstall and reinstall the device."

UPDATE: PC still running fine but a lot of strange activity by the Online Armor firewall recently that has me concerned. Have you taken a look at the Combofix log yet?

RE the firewall, last night a warning popped up that said a hidden process had been detected located at PID:5344 and the buttons for terminate the process or block it were grayed out, the only choice and the only way to get rid of the pop up was to click ALLOW. Also, some programs with bizarre names I have never heard of tried to run 2 nights ago shortly after I opened a Word doc from online (from an online college classroom blackboard which should be safe).
Here they are, I haven;t had a chance to look these up anywhere yet:

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

second Combofix log pasted below, again I got the error mssg "pev.3XE has encountered an error and needs to close" just before the actual scan started. Also I forgot to disable FW and AV programs before starting the scan, had to manually allow about 30 different things to run, hopefully that didn't cause any problems, eventually I was able to disable them before the actual scan started.

Can you give a brief answer as to what the script is for and if you are seeing any issues or if this is just routine? PC seems normal so far.
