Hello, all.

So I got that nasty System Fix malware, and I successfully ran rkill, MBAM, and finally unhide. SF is now totally gone. However, I have another issue...after running unhide about five times now, I still have icons and files hidden. I even tried to follow the instructions wherein I temporarily turned off all my antivirus, firewall, and security software and ran the program again, and I am STILL missing Start Menu items (i.e. Control Panel, Documents), desktop icons, and taskbar (is it called taskbar? Quick taskbar? I can't remember...) icons. My documents, music, pictures, etc are visible again, though. I don't know how to get the hidden stuff back up again.. Do I keep running unhide over and over and hope they come back? Is this something I will need to redo manually? Any help anyone can give me would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks, guys.

P.S....I am using Windows Vista Home Premium.

Yes, and I see three folders, numbered 1,2, and 4. Double clicking 1 goes like this :1 --> programs ---> I think every program I have on my computer right now. 2 and 4 go to nothing.

Copy the entire content of this folder:
C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\Temp\smtmp\1

and paste it to this folder:
c:\program data/microsoft/windows/start menu

Is your desktop blank ?

No. To test everything, I set a random picture as my background and it's keeping just fine. A few of my desktop icons came back, too when I ran unhide those first few times. They didn't all come back either, though, so my desktop is alot--er--BARER than it was before this whole fiasco...I also did as you suggested and now I have doubles of everything. Control panel and documents are still missing from my start menu, too :(

You did not copy as instructed

everything present in smtmp/1 should have been copied to startmenu folder and not the startmenu/programs folder

Right click on startmenu-properties

Click on startmenu tab-customize

Select use default settings

See if that helps

Good luck

I actually followed the directories as you instructed, but the new thing you showed me completely revived my start menu. All of my programs are back, and the only things I'm missing now are my Control Panel, Documents, etc. shortcuts and my taskbar icons. Are those just gone?

If SMTMP/2 and SMTMP/4 folders are empty then i dont think you can restore taskbar and desktop icons.

Right click on startmenu-properties

Click on startmenu tab-customize

Select use default settings///

This should have shown icons which are right side of the startmenu. Not sure why it didnt work for you

Ugh. It's okay. Thanks for the help you did give me. I'll just have to sort of build up from scratch on that, I suppose. I'm figuring it out quickly, though, so I should be up and running again in no time. At least my computer isn't infected anymore.

Thanks again. :)

Actually, there is one other thing that you may be able to explain, or it might fall under the same phenomena, I'm not sure...under "accessories" I am missing ALOT of things, my command prompt and my calculator just being a couple of them...any ideas on how to get those back? Or will those just be two other things I'll have to download?
