Dear BleepingComputer,

I am at my wits' end (I'm certain you hear that often) with infections that continually restart, even after supposedly being caught by Malwarebytes. About a week ago my computer (Windows 7, 64 bit) got the name changing Antivirus 2012 problem. I went through the self help guide on this site to clean it, and it seemed to work. However, now I am noticing a process called "ping.exe" which is eating up my CPU, and if I terminate the process it restarts itself. If I go to the Resource Monitor and suspend the process, it will help my CPU during that time, but the exe will eventually terminate on its own just to restart again. As a result, I've had to constantly have the Resource Monitor open to catch it when it starts and suspend it temporarily.

I use Firefox for web browsing, and if I search anything I get redirected to random sites. Especially when looking up computer help. Additionally, though my Malwarebytes program is up to date (albeit the free version), it seems to catch nothing except "PUP.bitminer" and doesn't seem to take any action against it. I try to remove the culprit, but it will always appear again on my next scan.

I'm a digital artist and terrified that all my work will be lost to my computer. Admittedly, I did not take the best care of my computer this year (didn't have any antivirus software, for shame!), and only started really running virus scans when I realized I had a big problem. I've run everything suggested on this site except Combofix, looked at entirely too many forum posts and help guides over the past week. I appreciate any help given, and thank you for your time.

-Korus

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/434837 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

This is my reply to say I still need assistance.

In the past few days since my original post, I've noticed some additional odd behavior. First, the next day Ping.exe suddenly stopped restarting itself. I don't know what happened, but the program never started back up after one of it's CPU draining rounds, and hasn't been back since. However, that doesn't mean I think it's just gone on it's own. I am still experiencing browser redirecting in Firefox.

Also, the Windows 7 Antivirus 2012 thing popped back up twice over the past couple of days. I don't know if it's coming from the internet or my computer, but I have been deliberately avoiding.. well, just about every page except for bare essentials as I don't know where these problems are coming from. Both times I went through the same process detailed here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-home-security-2012. It appeared to remove the problem, but who knows when it'll pop back up? The good news is my CPU has been much better since Ping.exe mysteriously stopped, but I don't trust it.

I do not have my original Windows 7 disc available. Thanks for any help guys, I know you are very busy. Here is my new DDS log:

Hi,

sorry for the delay. Please run ComboFix next:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

I ran Combofix, and it was a little odd. After it finished and said it was going to reboot, my computer went to a black screen and stayed there for a few hours. There was nothing visible except the cursor. Then it restarted and when I went into safe mode, it had the following log for me.

Well, I haven't run Combfofix again since then so I am unsure if it would do the same thing. I know I'm still having signs of infection... Windows Defender won't turn back on, it's giving me a message that reads "The specific service does not exist as an installed service. (Error Code: 0x80070424)". Windows Firewall is down and won't turn on either. The message it gives is "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. (Error Code: 0x80070424)".

They were both turned off already when I prepared to run Combofix earlier. I figured, a virus or malware had them disabled already, but I'm not sure.

Hello again,

I ran the tool and rebooted, it appeared to be fine, but there are no changes. Neither Defender or the firewall will turn on. I'm getting the same error messages as before.

Thanks for you time,
Korus

Hello again,

Ping.exe is still gone (thank goodness) but I'm still getting redirecting in Firefox and no change with the firewall/Defender.

Thank you!
