User Broni instructed me to start this thread based on my earlier post ----> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic434059.html/page__p__2520459__fromsearch__1#entry2520459

My Problem:
I have a problem that Malwarebytes can identify and remove, but it re-appears shortly thereafter (threat: c:\windows\svchost.exe).
Symptoms and effects:
1. Internet runs slow
2. Windows crashes when I wake it from sleep mode. Windows cannot restart without doing a start-up repair. Repair takes about 20 minutes. I have since disabled sleep mode.
3. Windows Security Center service is not operating and efforts to restart it fail.
4. Windows Action Center tells me I need to:
a) turn on windows security center service
B) address a problem with firefox plug-in container
c) address Java problem (window pops up upon start-up saying that Java update has failed)
d) install laser printer driver (although printers are working fine)
e) address a problem with windows (clicking on the "view message details" tries to open a page, but it says it cannot load)

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/434536 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I disabled AVG2012, MBAM, and windows firewall. Started Combofix, it tells me AVG is still operational. I checked it and tried again, still says AVG running. I uninstalled AVG, rebooted, tried Combofix, STILL says AVG is operating.
Combofix message:

Antivirus - AVG Free 2012
Antispyware - AVG Free 2012

are still operational, run Combofix at your own risk, damage could occur.

If AVG was removed no problem in running ComboFix. Ignore the error messages.

Ran ComboFix, it produced a text file. I then re-activated Windows firewall so that I could connect and post the log. When I attempted to start SECURITY CHECK, I got a pop- up message saying: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." I then tried to see if I could start other simple programs such as StickyNotes and Calculator and I got the same error message. Dag nabbit.

A restart of the computer is required to complete the registry fix.

Sorry 'bout that. As a side note, I did run my MBAM Free after Combofix and before posting these logs. MBAM still found the two threats I had previously [svchost.exe trojan]

The ComboFix is clean.

Please run MBAM and post the log for my review.

Please let me know what other problem persists on this computer.

I am posting this from another computer. As part of running Combofix on the infected machine, I ended up uninstalling avg2012; so I don't have any virus protection at this time. The infected machine is not currently connected to the network. Can I/should I install protection [e.g. Microsoft Security Essentials] prior to going online and posting logs? My MBAM is the free version, not the real-time one. Thank you very much for your help.

Can you not post the MBAM log using this second computer.

Copy the file to a CD or flash drive and use this second computer to post the log.

Hey nasdaq, I was afraid to move any files from an infected machine to a clean one, but now I'm on a Mac, so hopefully safe. I've got two MBAM logs for you a) after running Combofix and reboot, B) after running MBAM, deleting trojans, rebooting, and running MBAM again immediately. I have also attached two image files showing other potential problems,.

Here is the MBAM log:

See attached images for JAVA problem. Pop-up indicates problem with JAVA, but (prior to COMBOFIX) when clicked, it would error out. I haven't tried suggested JAVA remedy since running COMBOFIX.
Other image is of Windows Action Center indicating problem with Firefox, Java, and Printer driver. The print driver warning has been there prior to Combofix, but my printer is communicating with the PC and printing.

There is not problem in transferring .txt or .log files to the good computer. They are not executable and no virus/malware can come of it.

Did you restart the computer after running MBAM?

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

ClearJavaCache::

Save this as CFScript on your desktop.

Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Let me know what problem persists.
