Hi, nufc@fan,
Welcome!

Are you using the anti-virus component of your Norton-Internet Security along with AVG?
If so, that may be what is slowing things down as both are trying to scan in real-time. I suggest disabling or removing one.
Both anti-virus vendors have specific instructions for their products, so it would be best to check with them before uninstalling either one.

I do see a few things in your log that can be fixed, but first we must disable the monitoring by MSAS or it can interfere with registry changes that HijackThis makes.
1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray [It's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye.].
2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
3. Click on "Disable real-time protection".

Next right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray again to open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

1. Click on the Options menu and choose Settings.
2. In the left pane column click on "Real Time Protection".
3. Under Startup Options, uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents on startup (recommended)"
4. Under Real-time spyware threat protection, uncheck and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection" (recommended).
5. Click the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Finally, right-click on the MSAS icon in the system tray and select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware".
[After your system is fully cleaned reenable MSAS using the same steps but this time reverse them.]

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...arch.yahoo.com/
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all windows except Hijackthis and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot.

I see that you have Spybot, so I assume that you have run a scan. There was an update today, so you might want to update and rescan.
I also suggest running Ad-aware:
Please download Ad-Aware SE Personal and install it. If you already have Ad-Aware SE, please configure it as indicated below. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware, please uninstall your current version and install the newest version SE 1.06.
1) Run Ad-Aware, and click Check for updates now.
2) Select Configurations (click the Gear wheel at the top) as follows:
  • General Button > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
  • Tweak Button > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
Click Proceed.
3) To start the scan, Click > "Scan Now" at left
  • Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Select "Search for low-risk threats"
  • Select "Perform full system scan"
  • Click Next
4) When the scan has completed, select Next.
  • In the Scanning Results window, select the "Critical Objects" tab.
  • Right-click on the screen and choose "Select all objects"
  • In the "Scan Summary" tab, check the box next to each additional "target family" you wish to remove.
  • Click Next to remove the objects selected, and click OK to the prompt.
  • Restart the computer.
Following that run Disk Cleanup:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

That should have you in pretty good shape. Let me know how things are running.

Hello again, nufc@fan,

What program did you use to do the "pestscan"? Have you ever installed any of those P2P programs -- BearShare, Limewire, KaZaA, etc.?

Let's try a scan with Ewido as long as you already have it.
Please follow the instructions provided. You may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
Please reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key (or F5 on some computers)
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
*Click on Ewido>Scanner
Then select "Settings"
Under the bottom section "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is checked.
Select "OK" and you will return to scanning options.
*Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.

This scan can take quite a while to run, so please be patient .
While the scan is in progress, you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose Clean. Then put a check next to 'Perform action on all infections' . Doing this, enables the scan to proceed automatically until its completion. Click OK

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again. The best place to save it would probably be your Desktop.
Now close Ewido Anti Malware..
Reboot normally.
Please copy and paste the results from that scan back to this topic for review.

*Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 14 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button

Glad to hear that the computer is running better.
If you never installed those P2P programs, I don't know why pcpitstop's scan was picking them up.

You also might want to do a DiskCleanup:
Click "Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup"
Please make sure the following are checked:
-- Downloaded Program Files
-- Temporary Internet Files
-- Recycle Bin
-- Temporary Files
Click "OK" and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

If you want me to take a final look, please post another HijackThis log.

Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.

You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Download and install the following free programs:
a. SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/use-spywareblaster-to-protect-your-computer/
b. SpywareGuard: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Tutorial here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/use-spywareguard-to-protect-your-computer/
Periodically check for updates in both programs..

4. Keep your antivirus software and firewall software up to date.
Note: Zone Alarm Firewall (Zone Labs) http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp is free.
Sygate has an optional free version: http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm
Sunbelt Kerio has a free version: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html

5. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

6. Install spyware detection and removal programs:
You may also want to consider installing either or both of AdAware (free version) and Spybot S&D (freeware). Use these programs to regularly scan your system for and remove many forms of spyware/malware.

a. Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

b. SpyBot S&D: http://safer-networking.org/en/news/2005-05-31.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
I would check for updates in SpyBot once a week or so.
Check for updates in Ad-aware frequently.

If you have recently installed ewido, it is a free trial product for 14 days. After that you can purchase it for full features OR you can also keep the free version to use as an on-demand scanner (recommended).
You will still be able to manually update Ewido using the *update* button

7. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

8. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html

9. Here is a helpful article:
"So how did I get infected in the first place?"
http://computercops.biz/postlite7736-.html

Let us know if we have not resolved your problem. Otherwise, you are good to go.
Happy and Safe Surfing!

Your log appears to be clean.
You can fix these if you want to, but they are not malware.
(Don't forget to disable Microsoft Anti-Spyware first.)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Then close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot.

You seem to be in good shape.
