Hi,

My PC has been down for a few weeks starting with what appeared to be fake virus infection messages popping up.
(Not the first time I've seen them on this computer. In the past was able to clear problem with SAS and MBAM)
This time I was suddenly not able to run any programs at all.
At some point AVG reported an infection with generic14.bzsz
See topic http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic431469.html
After running xp_exe_fix.reg, I was afraid that it had not completed successfully because of messages:
"Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."
Other symptoms:
I can't update Windows Firewall.
Message: Windows Firewall was unable to make the requested updates.
I can't turn on Windows Defender
Message: Windows Defender encountered an error:0x80070424. The specified service does not exist as an installed service
I am currently using a macbook and porting the repair tools over to the PC with a flash drive.
The person assisting me (cryptodan) on the Am I Infected? What Do I Do? thread sent me over here.
I am pasting DDS.txt and attaching both the other DDS output and the GMER log
I am grateful for any help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/434394 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

The only Windows Operating System CD I have is the one supplied by Dell.

I am posting the DDS.txt and attaching the Attach.txt and Ark.txt

I realize I am low on free space again. I could archive some media files.

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Please download ComboFix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this web page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

IMPORTANT....

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.

How to : Disable Anti-virus and Firewall...
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt
Note:
Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
===

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Please post the logs for my review.

p.s with the type of infection I see, ComboFix may stall if it does after 30 minutes stop the process.
Run the tool again.

After the scan if you get a message the that registry key needs to be removed (some thing like it) just restart the computer.

Didn't go so smoothly.
Downloaded Combofix and SecurityCheck on my macbook.
Copied to flashdrive and transfered both programs to desktop of PC.
Set AVG disabled for the max 15 minutes.
Doubleclicked Combofix and after a few startup messages got a warning that AVG antivirus and antispyware were running.
I clicked OK.
Got a second warning.
Attempted to terminate Combofix but program continued to execute.
At some point Combofix reportes a zeroaccess rootkit and rebooted
after reboot ran through many Stages
program said it was going to produce a log
Screen went black and program stalled for more than half an hour.
Keyboard and mouse were unresponsive
I shut the machine down by holding the power button for a few seconds
Restarted machine and ran Combofix a second time
It ran faster and produced the log below
Security Check would not run.
Message: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion
Rebooted machine
Ran Security Check.
This time it ran but I couldn't find the checkup.txt file
Ran Security Check again and created checkup.txt pasted below.
Thanks for any help.

You did good.

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

JavaÖ 6 Update 22

None of my problems seem to have gone away.
I can make a broadband connection through my modem
but I can't update AVG SAS or MBAM, can't connect through Firefox and can't turn on Windows Firewall.

Downloaded Vista.zip file on macbook
Moved zip file to flashdrive
Unzipped file to PC desktop
Successfully ran:
afd.reg
nsiproxy.reg
tdx.reg

but Legacy_afd.reg gave message:
"Cannot import C:\...\Desktop\Legacy_afd.reg:
Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."
I did not continue executing the files but aborted the procedure.

Unfortunately no change in symptoms.

Legacy_afd.reg
Legacy_nsiproxy.reg
Legacy_tdx.reg

all gave message:
"Cannot import C:\...\Desktop\Legacy_###.reg:
Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

legacy_wscsvc.reg
gave message:
"Cannot import C:\...\legacy_wscsvc.reg: Error accessing the registry."

All else seemed to run OK.

Re-reading my previous post, I think I was being unclear.

The registry tinkering process ran pretty smoothly,
but I still can't connect to the internet via browsers, AVG, MBAM, or SAS.

Would you please run the complete registry process again. (Run the 10 Files)

Do not stop as you did the first time.

Make sure you execute the .bat file as suggested.

If you internet connection does not return please run the Farbar Service Scanner again and post the FSS log for my review.
