The following is a link of my original post in the Am I infected? forum.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic433084.html/page__gopid__2522241#entry2522241

Hi, I'm running windows 7, and it will not start normally. I get a blue screen with a stop code of: 0x0000005A (0x00000001, 0x00000001, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Then it will restart and a message appears saying windows is unable to start normally, it attempts to fix the problems but is unable to. If I boot in safe mode there is no problems. I attempted a system restore but there is not a restore point that goes back far enough. No infections were found after running AVG & MBAM.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/434304 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello, my name is Elise and I'll assist you with this issue.

Please restart your computer and tap F10 until the Edit Boot Options menu comes up. Let me know what is listed between the brackets ([... ]).

regards, Elise

Hello, does your internet work in safe Mode with networking?
Have you recently installed new hardware or been infected? What happened immediately preceding this problem?
I notice you have run combobix as well, please post me the log at c:\combofix.txt if there.

regards, Elise

I do have internet access in safe mode. I have no new hardware. I believe there was a windows updated immediately preceding this problem. I ran AVG and Malewarebytes in safe mode without a problem and there were some infections found and removed. I did run Combofix also, as it has worked for me in the past. Here is the log:

At what point exactly does the BSOD occur (what is the last thing you see, does it get until/after the Welcome screen, or directly after the XP loading screen)?

I see a black screen with Microsoft Corp at the bottom and the bar with the green blips(i dont know what that is called,) like its going to start normally then the screen goes completely black for 2 seconds and then the blue screen appears. After that it restarts and says windows could not start normally.

Have you tried a Startup Repair yet? If not, you can do so by tapping F8 when starting your computer, selecting Repair Windows and once the recovery environment is loaded, select Startup Repair.

After the black screen it takes me to a screen that asks if i want to do a repair. I have tried that several times, however at the end it says that windows cannot be repaired. I also tried the system restore, but there is not a point that goes back far enough. It only offers me a point when windows updated.

Since you mentioned that the problems began after Windows was updated, have you tried to to use the restore point that was created just before the update?

I have tried the system restore to the point right before the update and still no luck.

In that case lets have a look at the master boot record.

Try this please. You will need a USB drive.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • Gently tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type the following and press enter:

    dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1

  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a file will be located on your USB drive named mbr.bin
  • Remove the USB drive and insert it back in your working computer and navigate to mbr.bin, zip it up and attach it to your next reply.

This will allow me to have a look at the MasterBootRecord of your drive and see if it is infected.

regards, Elise
