A few days ago started the PC as normal, however there was no desktop only wallpaper. I cold open my comupter, local disk C:\, but there were no files listed. The same condition exists for my documents. I can open the control panel and can start XP Pro in safe mode.

I have run microsoft safety scanner which foud the titled trojan plus trojan downloader: JAVA/openconnection.ba and Progran: Win32/regcureinstaller. The scanner eliminated the JAVA and Win32, but listed DOS/Alureon.E as partially removed.

I ran Avast scan, which found a few more infected objects and removed them. I ran Malwarebytes, which discovered a few more infected objects and removed them. However each one still listed the titled trojan as partially reomoved.

What are the next steps to fully remove the trojan?

Hi chevyman12,

Welcome to BleepingComputer. :welcome: My name is sundavis, I will be helping you to deal with your Malware problems today.

Start> Run > type diskmgmt.msc into run box and press enter > Disk Management should prompt.

Take a whole Disk Management Window screenshot, make sure we can see all partitions after Disk 0 and attach that picture in your next reply. For more info: This thread . We will start from there. Thanks

Hi chevyman12,

Thanks for the screenshot. Lets move on...

Step1

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\TDSSKiller folder). Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Step2

  • If you already have Combofix, please delete that copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
  • Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
  • Note: CombFix has recently been updated to include the option for installing the Recovery Console automatically. The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Close/disable all antivirus and antimalware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow Combofix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When done, a log will be produced (or locate it in C:\ComboFix.txt). Please post that log in your next reply.
  • Do not mouse click on Combofix while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next reply, please post back:

1.TDSSKiller log
2.ComboFix log

Let me know if you have any remaining issues on your pc.

Hi Sundavis:
I could not get the TDSSKiller report to copy to this reply because it would not let me copy the report. I had to make screen shots of each page of the report. Then I tried to zip it, but when I try to attach it I get an error that the file is too big to upload. So all I can send is the Combofix text file. I hope this is enough. We did get back our desktop. However, when i go to START Programs most of the files are empty. I have to go to My Computer Local Disk C:\ Program Files to start any programs. How do I get START Programs to function?

Hi chevyman12,

How do I get START Programs to function?

Please download unhide.exe from this thread on your desktop. Close all windows and double click on it, a Dos Window should prompt, and let it run unhindered. When done, let me know how that works for you. After that, you may replace the wallpaper for your desktop.

Step1

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.or you can find from here:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • You can refer to this tutorial

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step2

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

In your next reply, please post back:

1.MBAM log
2.OTListIt.txt and Extra.txt Thanks.

Let me know if you have any remaining issues on your pc.

Hi Sundavis:

Unhide.exe did not solve the START Programs issue. Still cannot open programs from the START button pull-down. Most files are still showing (empty) when I hover over them. Only those programs which I have installed since trying to fix this virus(s) are those I may start up.
The requested documents are attached.

Hi chevyman12,

Unhide.exe did not solve the START Programs issue

It doesn't sound good. If you had removed temp files with some temp cleaners, those shortcut icons might be disappear. Lets check it out and proceed the following:

Step1

Copy all contents of the following red folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Davies\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\1

and paste it to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu

Copy all contents of the following red folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Davies\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\2

and paste it to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Davies\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Copy all contents of the following red folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Davies\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\3

and paste it to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Davies\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

Copy all contents of the following red folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Davies\Local Settings\Temp\smtmp\4

and paste it to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

If those shortcut icons were already removed from smtmp folder, the final option is restore it manually. Please proceed the Step2 accordingly.

Step2

You can restore the defaults for the Start Menu, Accessories and Administrative Tools as follows:
Posted Image
  • Then click on the Restore button.

After that, go to C:\Programs Files folder

Double click on the program's folder, right click on the <program name>.exe which shortcut icon was missing from start menu, click "Create Shortcut". Move the shortcut to Programs folder in the following filepath ---> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs

Let me know if you still have any remaining issues on your pc.
