Greetings,

Count me among the many attacked by the Windows (insert OS here) Antivirus 2012 rogue. Although I hate to add to the many requests for assistance, it appears the smart thing to do is allow you experts to address each case on an individual basis. So here is my particular scenario/problem:

--I am running Windows 7 x64 on a Dell laptop connected via Wi-Fi through a Netgear router and a cable modem.
--I have F-Prot Antivirus and Malwarebytes installed (and did before the virus attacked).
--Java version is 6 Update 26

I was able to remove/halt Windows 7 Antivirus 2012 but am suffering stubborn after effects and would appreciate help/advice to resolve the following:

1. Google redirects (I am using Chrome). Repeated Malwarebytes/F-Prot scans with the most up-to-date virus signature files show no infections.

2. No Windows Firewall. I get the 0x80070424 and 0x6D9 (snap-in security) error codes. Under services, the Windows Firewall Authorization Driver displays the yellow exclamation mark on the icon. I've done extensive reading/research on this topic and it appears there is no fix at this time. So my question is, what do I need to do to make sure my computer is protected? Is it imperative to fix the Windows Firewall? Am I protected through my router? Should I install a firewall program like Zone Alarm?

Hope I provided everything needed. I thank you greatly for your time and expertise.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

=================================================================================

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Let's start with missing "hosts" file.

Open Notepad.
Paste the following text into it:

# Copyright © 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Go File>Save As and...

1. Name the file hosts. (no extension; make sure there is just a "dot" at the end <--- VERY IMPORTANT!)
2. Make sure, "Save as type:" is set to "All Files (*.*)
3. File is saved to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder

NOTE.
If you receive You don't have permission to save in this location message take ownership of C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/
If the above doesn't work save the file to some known location, like your desktop, copy it from there and paste it to "etc" folder.

Still getting redirects, still no Windows Firewall. When I attempt to check Firewall status, I get the "Update Your Firewall Settings" window and the message "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to protect your computer." If I click on "Turn Windows Firewall on or off," or "Use recommended settings," I get "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings" and error code 0x80070424c.

Also, under dvcmgmt, the Windows Firewall Authorization Driver still displays a yellow exclamation mark.

Most likely you're still infected and you'll need more advanced help.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

One last question/problem... I am not able to download DDS via that link. Nothing happens when I click on it. Tried it on my other computer, doesn't work there either.

Sorry to bother you again!

Merci, spasibo, gracias and thanks!

I don't know if this is helpful, but I've actually been working on three different computers my daughter was using that were hit with the Windows Antivirus 2012 malware. We suspect it was the Verpets site that infected the computers.

All are laptops, two running Windows XP, and the one you've been helping me with, running Windows 7. It's been interesting how the malware has affected the different computers. All of them lost their file associations, and I was able to restore those on all computers.

Both laptops running XP lost their ability to connect to the Internet. I was able to get one of those back online by restoring the netbt.sys driver. The other XP laptop is still offline, the malware left the netby.sys driver on that one, but it won't recognize any wireless networks within range. Still working on that mystery. My laptop, running Windows 7, has had no problems with Internet connection.

The Windows Firewalls were left intact on the two XP laptops but as you know, have not been able to get my Firewall up on the laptop running Windows 7.

And my Windows 7 laptop has the Google redirect issue; the two XP laptops appear to be free of this.

If this information is useful, feel free to share/post.
