I came across this post while researching some problems I'm having recently. Being that the problem sounded the same, I followed the instructions recommended by Broni. I've collected the logs requested and I'm wondering if anyone can help me interpret them. Can I post the logs in this thread or would it be advisable to post them in a new thread? Thanks in Advance, MNLiver

Hi Broni, The thread I am referenced in the earlier post is: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic431392.html

The problem I'm having is a swarm of attacks. Windows crashing and then having trouble restarting. Was able to restart by using a restore point (but I did get a window that said, "system restore could not complete error (0x800700b7). AVG and MalwareBytes when run, do find trojans and either remove them or state that they can't be found for removal. But it seems that the same problems happen again the next day. Running these two processes locate problems again. The crash of windows usually happens when the computer is idle; and then when windows tries to reboot, it says that it is having problems starting so it goes through an automatic start-up repair. It eventually does come back up, and I go through the AVG & MalwareBytes exercises again. In addition, the Action Center is telling me to turn on Windows Security Center service, but when I click to activate, it says that it can't be started.

I did follow the steps in the referenced thread and additional threats were removed, logs generated, and updates done. What I don't know is if I am clean and safe now or should I take other steps? I can post the logs if you think it would be helpful. I am using Windows7 Home Premium Version 6.1 (Build 7601:Service Pack1). HP machine, Intel Core i5 CPU, 750@2.67GHz, 6GB RAM, 64-bit Op System. I use Firefox, but I did have IE on the machine as well. Since I don't normally use IE, I removed it today. Thank you

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
    This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
    This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

I'll have to come back with the GMER log. Ran it this morning and now the text document is blank. Musta messed it up somewhere along the way. I'll run it again and post back with results.

I don't see much there....

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Thanks Broni, I'll follow the steps above.

Some additional information: My lovely wife started the computer this morning. While using it, AVG caught and blocked a threat (I can't find a record of the event in AVG's log history). Shortly thereafter, another AVG window popped up, concerned wife decided to leave everything alone for me to look at. By the time I got there, computer had gone to sleep. I awoke it with a tap to the shift key and mouse movement. For a split second I saw the AVG warning window and then windows shut down. When windows tried to restart, I chose safe mode. Windows couldn't start and went into start-up repair mode. This took about 25 minutes and when it finally started, it wasn't in safe mode. Windows provided a crash-log (see below). I ran Malwarebytes full scan and it came back with one threat: c:\windows\svchost.exe This is the same threat that seems to be replicating itself over and over. Am I doomed?
