Windows XP Professional version 2002 Service Pack 3
I use Chrome as my primary browser, but I also use FireFox on occasion.

I've had this problem before... and unfortunately I wasn't able to solve it before a major problem with my Hard Drive forced me to wipe it clean and start fresh (boot sector failure, nothing to do with the virus). Anyway, it appears I have this problem again and it's getting rather annoying.

I've tried:
-Searching for suspicious entries with HijackThis. Found some Eastman Kodak stuff (probably from an old printer install that I uninstalled later, but I killed them anyway just to be sure).
-Scanning with AVG 2012, which found a few things but ultimately didn't help. That was yesterday. After starting up the computer this morning it stopped a RUNDLL32.EXE and sent it to quarantine.
-Downloading and scanning with TDSSKiller, which found nothing.

I'm starting to run out of tricks here... so I figured I'd ask for help here.

The main issues are:
-Getting random redirects while clicking Google search results links (Haven't tried with another search engine but I assume it works the same).
-I was getting strange file download confirmations popping up. They were not related to anything I was doing at the time. They looked to be image files by the name, but I canceled every time because... clearly... it had to be something malicious. This seems to have stopped, however. It's possible the AVG Quarantine helped on this issue.
-I was also getting random IE popups (even though I never really use the browser), but like the file downloads, that seems to have stopped too.

So really it seems like the only problem is the redirects. For now, anyway. Never know when this stuff will jump up again.

I have no idea where to even look to fix this kind of a problem because, as I understand it, the redirection method isn't specific to a single file that can be found on the system. But rather... it changes certain settings that are deep in the computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Hello and welcome.
Are you on a router? Are other machines on it,if so are they redirecting?

Please run these next.
Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

>>>>
Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

>>>>
Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Download Link 1 <<<== Use this one first.

Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I have a Wireless router that distributes my Cable signal from my Roomates computer to mine (and another roomates computer as well). I asked and they said they haven't noticed anything odd. But they aren't on it as much as I'm on mine, so that's kinda up in the air.

Anyway, here are the logs you asked for.

Ok, good that means the router is not infected.

Goored and MBAM cleaned a few. Running any better now, still redirecting?

We should still do an Online scan.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

I noticed it still redirecting after everything I did yesterday. I haven't tested after this latest scan to see if it is still doing it. I'll be sure to post if it is (I get the feeling it will, since the last time I fought a virus like this it wasn't the result of a virus but rather a setting that was changed on my machine).

*edit* Just tried a few searches. After clicking 5 links or so I was redirected in the same manor I have always been. What's really irritating about this process is that I can't know for sure if the problem has been fixed until I test it out... and when it happens who knows what sorts of additional viruses I may have gotten from these blasted redirects.

Here is the latest log.

Let me know about the redirects.

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u2-windows-i586.exe (or jre-7u2-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Okay, did as instructed. Newest Java has been installed.

Unfortunately, the redirects are still happening. It always seems to go to get-answers-fast.com and then is sent to an ip address or infomash.org.

Try turning off all ADD ons in Firefox.. You can do this one by one to see which one (if) is the culprit.

Uninstalling add-ons

If this fails to stop the re directs then we need a deeper look. Please go here....
Preparation Guide ,do steps 6 - 9.

Create a DDS log and post it in the new topic explained in step 9,which is here Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks.
If Gmer won't run, skip it and move on.
Include a link back to this topic.

Let me know if that went well.

I disabled all Firefox plugins, but I never really noticed the problem with Firefox to begin with. I've been using Chrome this entire time. Still, it's interesting to note that the FireFox network options were set to 'Use system proxy settings'. I also disabled that (set to 'no proxy') as well and found no problems at all with Firefoz redirecting Google searches. However, Chrome is still doing it.

Anyway, I've completed steps 6 and 7. Gmer is scanning as we speak. I'll post a new topic as soon as it's done.

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRL Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

The current wait time is 3 - 5 days and ALL logs are amswered.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.
