I don't know what to call this problem and that is the problem. In Word 2007, every once in a while a small square tab appears in the middle of the text offering a mini-menu of formatting options. It is very irritating as it covers the text where I was working and won't go away until I start typing again. If I knew what it was called, I could probably turn it off. Does anyone know how to turn it off.

I know what you are talking about but not what the box is called. Have you looked in the Options Section of the Office Start Menu. There are a number of settings available in there that can customize how Word operates for you. Wish I could remember the exact sections but I've been working in 2010 for the last couple of years. If it is the same area, you'll find it under Advanced > Cut,Copy & Paste.

They are called "Smart Tags" and should be called "Annoying Tags!" They can be turned off. Search in "help" for instructions.
