Poor Wireless Connectivity

I have a few laptops that have a centrino processor and the wireless network card puts out poor performance (18Mbps vs 54Mbps) does anyone have a clue what would cause this? Driver? The Wifi is a Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN.
