I noticed that when I shut down the computer, the screen turns off as normal, but the cpu keeps its green light and was still running. Does the same when attempting to restart. I had to hold down the power button to force turn it off. It is like something is grabbing a hold of my CPU system and preventing from completely rebooting or turning off. Anyways, here are all the logs I ran below. Details/ small concerns of the logs are at the above link.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

I posted the log in an attachment just in case the full log could not be posted, because I needed to explain what occurred during this scan.

Okay, so I ran combo fix. First it made me download the Microsoft Recovery Console, which I dont know why because I already had it installed on my computer in the past. But I had this one added to that one anyway. At first scan,it said this "Your computer is infected with Rootkit.Zero Access! It has inserted itself into the tcp/ip stack. This is particularly difficult infection." Then it told me if I couldnt connect online, try rebooting computer. If not, run Combofix again. luckily I didn't have to re-run it, which was the directions that were given to me anyway. It also said "Rootkit is detected. Be patient as this may take some moments. I closed out the ok window it supplied. It rotated back and forth between this statement and the first long message in the sentence before. Then my computer beeped once and ComboFix said it had to autoreboot my computer.

It made my computer reboot a couple of times, which I believe is normal. The first reboot combofix influenced, I had to force turn it off as I had to before and turn it back on. Combo fix resumed and I kept getting weird pop-up messages over top of combo fix saying stuff like Pev.3XE- Corrupt file, swxcacls.3XE. I'd close out the box and it would continue having boxes appear saying random files in my directory was corrupt and unreadable and to run Chkdsk utility. Also at the very end after my log was produced, my bottom right-hand corner window had a yellow warning sign saying CF21040.3XE-Corrupt File.

Luckily, there is good news. The second time Combofix rebooted my computer, my computer did it on its own. I did not need to hold the power button to force it off. I will now see if it will shut down on its own too. Edit** The computer was able to shut down at its own will, which solves the immediate problem that I initially complained about.

Main concerns: the corrupted files messages. Is that a major problem? Plus, the beginning boot up for Windows has became slower than normal. What does it mean? Lastly, a few files were unable to be delected using ComboFix. Are those files still affecting my computer in some way?

Please let me know what is the next step to getting my computer back in order and let me know what the corrupt files mean.

By the way, should I also keep my anti-virus and firewall stuff disabled?

Ok,

you will need to keep your anti virus disabled for the online scan, other than that, you can re-enable it

Please run the following:

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • When the scan completes, press the LIST OF THREATS FOUND button
  • Press EXPORT TO TEXT FILE , name the file ESETSCAN and save it to your desktop
  • Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Press the BACK button.
  • Press Finish

Okay, I ran all the scans. Both were able to detect infections; 1 for MBAM and about 24 from ESET. I will post the logs at the end of this message. As for the $NtUninstallKB29935$
, it would not let me delete it, which is obviously suspicious. It tried to delete, but poped up the warning message "Cannot delete $NtUninstallKB29935$: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or Write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." So, I dont know what the deal is with this folder, which calls for concern.

Anyways, here are the logs for Malwarebytes and ESET

Hi

Yes, the permissions are removed from that folder, it's likely empty, we'll deal with that later, right now there is an infected file that we need to find a replacement for,

Please do the following:

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

    :filefind
    *redbook*

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

okay, so I ran the system look. After I ran it, the bottom right-hand corner task tray popped up with a yellow warning sign, which said:

SystemLook.exe-corrupt file

The file or directory C:/$Mft is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

But anyways, heres the log from SystemLook:

Hi

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

FCopy::
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\redbook.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\redbook.sys

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Boot\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\55\29a44837-58a0e29c
C:\Documents and Settings\Boot\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\57\59a2a379-1dc5cd0e
C:\Documents and Settings\Boot\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\6\5b3d5486-1611818f
C:\Documents and Settings\Boot\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\60\5c2bd6bc-7364f43a
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\49\618f0df1-202f756c
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\49\618f0df1-3c048fdc

ClearJavaCache::

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

Posted Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix may request an update; please allow it.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Okay, I ran it again. It at first said to reboot after the updates were made, but when it was about to, I saw the okay box used to scan using Combofix. So instead of rebooting, it went ahead and scanned like normal. I dont understand what that was about. It still told my that I still had the Zero Access Rootkit and a rootkit being present. It had to reboot and resume just before the full opening of Windows XP (when the programs and stuff appear on the wallpaper). I still noticed pev.3XE messages occupying in front of the combofix while it was scanning. I must have clicked ok to close out about 20 boxes that flashed in front of combofix. Then at the end and after it spat out a log, the bottom right corner gave a yellow warning sign saying that CF23107.3XE was corrupt and to put in a Chkdsk utility. I don't understand what these messages mean or the true effects they are having on my computer.

Note: Does Super Antispyware have a disabling process or is it just like Malwarebytes?

Anyways, here's the log:

I believe you only need to exit the program for it to be disabled:

To exit SUPERAntiSpyware, right-click the SUPERAntiSpyware system tray icon (the orange/brown bug running near your clock) and select "Exit" from the menu.

Your copy of ComboFix may have been corrupted, so delete the copy you have and download a fresh copy from the link below and run it >

if you still get the same error messages, then run ChkDsk

Link 1

to run ChkDsk

  • Click Start > Run... then type in CMD and click on OK.
  • At the Command Prompt C:\ > type the following: chkdsk c: /r and hit the Enter/Return key.
Note: chkdsk c: /r presumes that the disk upon which you wish to run Error Checking is your C: Drive (most often)
  • When prompted with:

CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked next time the system
restarts (Y/N)

  • Hit the Y key then at the Command Prompt C:\ >
  • Type in EXIT and and hit the Enter/Return key.
  • Now Reboot(Restart) your computer.
Note: Upon Reboot(Restart), CHKDSK will start and carry out the repairs required.

Okay, first of all, the yellow bug is not present in my task bar. So, it should be disabled. As for the Chkdsk, it did it on its own. I had my computer off and when I turned on the desktop, it automatically ran it. It said in the beginning:

"Checking File system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
The volume is dirty.
Chkdsk is verifying files" and then it went on to delete corrupt attribute records and correcting errors.

So what does this mean? Do I need to still delete/ redownload Combofix and run it? Also, do need to still run Chkdsk in the steps you gave me?

I would think that the chkdsk that ran automatically has resolved any issues that may have been present

so please just go ahead and download a fresh version of ComboFix and run it, let me know if there are still error messages

Okay, so I ran the Combofix, and it still said it detected the Zero Access Rootkit, and said a rootkit has been detected, please be patient for a few minutes, something of that nature. Then actomatically rebooted my system.

However, the Combofix ran smotthly without any error or corrupted messages. So what is next to do, especially for this supposed rootkit it keeps saying it has detected?

Here is the log:

There is nothing in the logs that indicate the infection is still active, but let's run a couple of rootkit scanners to make certain,

  • Please download aswMBR.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click aswMBR.exe to start the tool. (Vista/Windows 7 users - right click to run as administrator)
  • When asked if you want to download Avast's virus definitions please select Yes.
  • Click Scan
  • Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your desktop, and post that log in your next reply for review. Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.
  • You will also notice another file created on the desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) file. Attach that zipped file in your next reply as well.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.
  • Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent .
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.

    Posted Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries
