Posted 20 December 2011 - 07:55 PM

Got infected with Vista Security 2012.
Followed all guidance re: FixNCR, RKill, MBAM,and TDSSKiller. Ran all from flash-drive after downloading on clean laptop.

Computer runs, but cannot reset Windows Firewall. Tried a few sites and searches on Google--so far no redirects or popups.

Ran DDS.
Ran GMER---program stopped working after a few minutes (have screenshot of error message, if needed).

DDS log pasted here.
Attach.txt attached.
Do not have ark.txt

Appreciate your help.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me Agent ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. :)

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed.

If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:

  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
  • If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days
failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Be prepared to back up your data. Have means of backing up your data available.

____________________________________________________

It looks like you maybe infected with an infection known as ZAccess.

I'd really like to try and get a look at a GMER log from your computer.

Please try these instructions:

Scanning with GMER

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Posted Image
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop.

First==Thank you for your help Agent ST. I really appreciate it.

While awaiting your help, when I booted the PC, I got a startup error message "could not run C:\Users...Temp\06217~1.exe specified in the registry."
That error message did NOT appear today when booting.

1) I am downloading all files from clean PC and transferring to Bad PC via flash drive
2) Ran GMER as admin---with unchecked boxes as directed=== GMER crashed
3) Turned off McAfee, repeated GMER===crashed
a. Overlooked the direction to try GMER in Safe Mode
4) Ran OTL as directed===obtained OTL log and Extras
5) Restarted in Safe Mode and tried to re-run GMER==crashed and got Blue Screen of Death and auto restart
6) Re-ran GMER unchecking Devices==crashed and got Blue Screen of Death and auto restart
7) Ran OTL again==Got OTL log, but NO extras file this time.
8) I have posted the last OTL log here and the only (original) extras log.

Questions:

Can I / Should I be running the Bad PC while connected to the internet? So far all the interaction with your website is via a clean PC and flash-drive swaps of files.

In the preparation pages, there was mention of turning off CD Emulation. Is that an issue for me? I don’t know if I have a CD emulation program running.

Howdy!

While awaiting your help, when I booted the PC, I got a startup error message "could not run C:\Users...Temp\06217~1.exe specified in the registry."

Thanks for that information.

Can I / Should I be running the Bad PC while connected to the internet? So far all the interaction with your website is via a clean PC and flash-drive swaps of files.

If you can connect to the internet using the infected P.C. then I'd say to do so only to follow the instructions i provide to you, as it'll most likely be a lot easier for you to do that.

In the preparation pages, there was mention of turning off CD Emulation. Is that an issue for me? I don’t know if I have a CD emulation program running.

Running ComboFix
Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

Note: If AVG or CA Internet Security Suite is installed, you must remove these programs before using Combofix. If for some reason these applications will not uninstall, try uninstalling with AppRemover by Opswat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.

You were right...It's ZeroAccess according to the warning that Combofix posted.

Did my best to disable antivirus. I have Cox Security Suite (McAfee). I turned off all scanning options, and Combofix gave warnings and then continued to run. There was one reboot during the Combofix scan and the reboot was to a black screen with just the Combofix window open.

Here are the scans.

Good Evening!

You were right...It's ZeroAccess according to the warning that Combofix posted.

As this is indeed ZeroAccess please yield the following warning:

Posted Image One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan and password stealer.

This type of infection allows hackers to access and remotely control your computer, log keystrokes, steal critical system information, and download and execute files without your knowledge.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it contains any other sensitive information, then from a clean computer, change all passwords where applicable.
It would also be wise to contact those same financial institutions to appraise them of your situation.

I highly suggest you take a look at the two links provided below:
1. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud, and CC Fraud?
2. When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you decide to go through with the cleanup, please proceed with the following steps.

NEXT:

Did my best to disable antivirus. I have Cox Security Suite (McAfee). I turned off all scanning options, and Combofix gave warnings and then continued to run. There was one reboot during the Combofix scan and the reboot was to a black screen with just the Combofix window open.

Okay, thanks for providing me with that information.

Lets see what these scans find, and see where we stand then.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

I see that you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer could you please do a scan using these settings:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
  • Select Perform quick scan, then click on Scan
  • Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results
  • Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest
Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

NEXT:

ESET Online Scanner
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET Online Scan

  • When the Computer scan settings display shows, click the Advanced option, the place a check next to the following (if it is not already checked):
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin
scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image

Yikes, that's really disturbing. I am very inclined to do a re-install, but I will run the processes you've suggested in the meantime.

I'm not sure how I'd do a re-install of Vista. --UPDATED--I found the Vista Reintall Disk--

The good news is that I have been regularly backing up my data, so I shouldn't lose too much at all.

Please let me know how much effort will be involved in a wipe/reinstall and I'll work on changing passwords today. I have no passwords stored and I do not maintain any browser history.

I've decided to reinstall the OS. But I am running the scans you recommended.

As noted earlier, I have most of my data backed up and on a separate drive. A couple of questions:

1) Is it safe for me to back up (and later re-install) recent data files--files that were saved between last backup and infection? I don't want to bring the virus with me to a newly formatted HD.

2) Is the reformat and reinstall process something you can / will help me with or should I refer to Dell or Microsoft for directions?

3) Is there a "wipe" process (Fdisk??) that I need to use first?

4) What about repartitioning and potential impact on BIOS?

Thanks for your help.

Good Evening FRGuy!

The good news is that I have been regularly backing up my data, so I shouldn't lose too much at all.

That's very good!

Unfortunately, many users I help here on the forums never back up any of there data. So it's a nice surprise when a user does perform backups of there data.

1) Is it safe for me to back up (and later re-install) recent data files--files that were saved between last backup and infection? I don't want to bring the virus with me to a newly formatted HD.

This is a question I get asked quite often whenever a user is going to reformat and re-install. My answer tends to be the same as well. It really depends.

I say it depends, because a lot of times we have no way of knowing what exactly an infection has been up to, besides causing havoc. In the next paragraph this will be answered a little better.

This is what I usually tell my users who are going to reformat and re-install the operating system:

Reformatting a hard disk deletes all data. You can back up all your important documents, personal data files, photos to a CD, DVD drive, flash drive or external hard drive. The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (.exe), screensavers (.scr), autorun (.ini) or script files (.php, .asp, and .html) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid backing up compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar) that have executable files inside them as some types of malware can penetrate and infect .exe files within compressed files too. Other types of malware may even disguise itself by adding and hiding its extension to the existing extension of file(s) so be sure you look closely at the full file name. After reformatting, scan the backed up data with your anti-virus prior to to copying it back to your hard drive.

Special thanks to Quietman7 for the following:

If you're not sure how to reformat and reinstall Windows, please review:

These links include specific step-by-step instructions with screenshots:Vista users can refer to these instructions:Windows 7 users can refer to these instructions:Don't forget you will have to go to Microsoft Update and apply all Windows security patches after reformatting.

If you need additional assistance with reformatting, partitioning or reinstalling the OS, you can start a new topic in the Operating Systems Subforums forum.

2) Is the reformat and reinstall process something you can / will help me with or should I refer to Dell or Microsoft for directions?

I tend to refer the users I help who wish to reformat to the Windows forum. In your case the Windows Vista forum, as I feel like you'd be getting the best possible assistance from the techs over there.

3) Is there a "wipe" process (Fdisk??) that I need to use first?
4) What about repartitioning and potential impact on BIOS?

I'm going to leave those 2 questions for the techs to answer, as I feel they'd be able to answer them the best.

I ask that when you post your topic in the Windows Vista forum you include a link to this thread, so that a tech can see what we've already done so far, and where we are at. I'd also ask that you post the link of your new thread, so that I can follow the progress of it.

Your ESET log indicates that you have 2 infected items in your Java cache.

You can run this script to remove them:

OK. Here's the latest OTL Log, but as I will reinstall Vista, this may be operation on a dead patient...BUT, I ran a scan on my backup data (backed up on Seagate standalone drive) and ESET (native install on work PC) found 9 infiltrations. I will post what I can from that scan, and I'll need your help to ensure that I don't re-introduce anything to my soon to be reinstalled Vista.

Here is what ESET NOD32 found when I scanned my backup drive...Can you help me clean this up?

Given that the backup is not an OS, is it safe for me to copy the other files from the backup drive to my "cleaned" PC?

Hi FRGuy!

Here is what ESET NOD32 found when I scanned my backup drive...Can you help me clean this up?

I sure can! :)

Given that the backup is not an OS, is it safe for me to copy the other files from the backup drive to my "cleaned" PC?

Yes, I think it'd be safe to do that. Please run the OTL script below before you do this though.

It appears that these items below:

Were not scanned because NOD32 encountered an archive. It didn't scan the files inside of the archives because they were disabled in the scanner setup.

Would you have any objections to running a script to remove this folder entirely?

D:\Seagate Backup\WAXHOME-PC\C\Users\Larry and Donna\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache

I personally don't foresee any issues with removing the back-up folder, as I can't see you needing any information stored in that folder.

I'm going to give you a script for removing that folder entirely.

If you'd prefer to keep it, let me know, and I'll alter my script accordingly.
