My windows explorer (and all programs that use it including my Virus checker) crash when they try to access a particular directory. In addition, explorer is unstable and crashes regularly.

Probably a separate problem, but when I click on links in Internet explorer, I'm forwarded to unwanted sites..10-top.com, oldhetaira.com, up-search.com

Here's the log: thanks

Hello ferris2

You have a WareOut infection.
I'll try to help you out, just give some time to study your log.

Hello ferris2,

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items (if they appear):O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmodh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmodh.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{42C69972-45D1-42C9-A8DD-11078E66A6D5}: NameServer = 85.255.113.206,85.255.112.172
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{42C69972-45D1-42C9-A8DD-11078E66A6D5}: NameServer = 85.255.113.206,85.255.112.172
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\{42C69972-45D1-42C9-A8DD-11078E66A6D5}: NameServer = 85.255.113.206,85.255.112.172

If you see a new item that wasn't in your last log in the O4 section of HijackThis, five-letters long, starting with dm... for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dm***.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dm***.exe (the *** stand for random letters)
or starting with hg***.exe for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hg***.exe] C:\Windows\System32\hg***.exe
or starting with cs***.exe for example:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cscyd.exe] cscyd.exe
Check it as well. If you're not sure, leave it and only check the ones I asked you to check.

Then click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

If you experience problems with your internet connection, try this:
Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks BMThor

I ran the fixwareout twice becasue I missed a dmnkr the first time. This is the log for the second fix, the first time I deleted each of the 017 entries you described. Thanks again.

Hello ferris2,

I would have liked to see both Fixwareout reports, since the second one doens't show much anymore.

However, the fix apparently worked.
Your log looks clean,

but you still need to delete those 3 files manually!:
Using Windows Explorer find and delete C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CSWDF.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMIXS.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMNKR.EXE
Reboot and check again to be sure they are and stay gone. :flowers:

Please let me know if you manage to clear them away,
and if you still experience any other problems.

------------------------------------------------------

Below I have included some recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously ; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

1. Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ on a regular basis and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer.
This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

2. It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and instal one of these excellent (and free) products: Sygate
Kerio
Tiny Personal Firewall
Outpost
It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

3. In order to protect yourself better against spyware, you should consider installing an additional free antispyware program:Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

IE/Spyad
Places over 5000 dubious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
Make sure to keep your antispyware programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

4. Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is very good and more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has a built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) . If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: How I got Infected in the First Place
and/or Grinlers tutorial on how malware is hidden and installed
Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck

Thanks BMThor

All files deleted and gone after reboot. I have a personal firewall as part of the Pccillin Internet security program. The Windows Internet Security program shows this as operating. I also have a hardware firewall coutesy of my router.

Thanks for the other advice. I run Sybot and Adaware regularly.
