I have a Satellite A105, laptop with Windows XP on it. It has Service Pack 3 and 2 GB of RAM. The laptop was infected with Windows XP 2012 virus. I used Malwaebytes, Super Antispyware and Spybot Search & Destroy to remove it. I don't see any more signs of the virus but I can't get the internet working. Here's what I've done to try to get the internet working.....
reset the firewall......netsh firewall reset, try Winsockfix , I stopped DHCP Client service and then restarted DHCP Client service, run ipconfig /flushdns
run ipconfig /release.....ipconfig /renew, deleting the Local Area Connection and renewing the network connection..., Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults by running:
netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults:
netsh int ip reset reset.log, obtain IP address automatically" checked, net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2 ....reboot the computer back to normal mode.I even downloaded a "fix'( Microsoft Fitit 50199).
All I get is " Acquiring address. The laptop says I'm connected but I can't get an IP Adress. It won't work with the LAN or the wireless. I'm hoping these logs that I post will give you some idea how to help.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I Close My Topics If You Have Not Replied In 5 Days If You Will Be Longer Please Let Me Know

8. Still in Control Panel double click on "Internet options" then "Connections" tab then "LAN Settings" button. Make sure "Automatically detect settings" is checked.
If you made any changes OK your way out.
Restart computer.

------------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 minute. At the same time disconnect ethernet cable as well.
Reconnect everything.
Restart computer.

------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

---------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista and 7, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Restart computer.

-------------------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista and 7), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

----------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista and 7)
Restart computer, and check again.

-------------------------------------------------------------

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista and 7):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.

All my settings were set correctly.
When I tried to run ....... ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"
I got the same bsic error message.......AN INTERNAL ERROR OCCURED. THE REQUEST IS NOT SUPPORTED.

Winsockfix didn't fix the problem

When I ran Dial-A-Fix the 1rst time, I had soo many errors that I figured I set it up wrong so I rebooted and ran it again.

When I ran Dial-A-Fix the 2nd time, first thing the happened was I got an error that said...." Dial-A-Fix was unable to determine you version of Internet Explorer. Certain dll registrations will be skipped. Please email dial-a-fix@Djlizard

I hit ok then selected every box on the first page. Then I hit enter.
Everything went good until I got to the 2nd page and to " repair permisions". A note said: You do not seem to have C:\WINDOWS\system32\secedit.exe. You can download it from http://Djlizard.net/software/secedit-sfx.exe
Then I ran "reset networking" and then rebooted.
That didn't fix the problem and I still cannot start the Windows firewall.

Whats next ? And I want to really thank you for putting soo much into this !

Also wanted to say that even though my computer says that the Local Area Connection 4 is connected, it isn't sending or recieving anything. It says connected and the speed is 100 Mbps

Now we are going for a major fix. Please make sure you follow the steps carefully. This time we concentrate on Local Area connection and not the wireless connection. If in any stage you have questions or doubts please feel free to post before proceeding.

  • Go to Start ==> Run (or Windows key+R)
    • Type the following in the run box and click OK: notepad c:\windows\inf\nettcpip.inf
(note that there is space after notepad)
    • A file opens in the notepad. Under TCP/IP Primary Install section find the following: Characteristics = 0xA0
    • Edit 0xA0 and replace it with 0x80 (replace A with 8)
    • Under File menu click Save and close the notepad.
  • Go to Start ==> Control Panel. Double-click Network Connections. Right-click Local Area Connection, and select Properties.
    • On the General tab, click Install a popup window opens.
    • Select Protocol from the list and then click Add.
    • A new window opens, click Have Disk....
    • In the browse... box type c:\windows\inf
    • Click OK.
    • Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
    • On the Local Area Connection Properties screen select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Uninstall, and then click Yes.
    • Wait until it asks to restart, confirm restarting.

I stopped mid way thru #2 because when I finished
•In the browse... box type c:\windows\inf

•Click OK.
There was nothing that looked like.........•Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.

on #2 when I
•In the browse... box type c:\windows\inf

•Click OK,
There was a box and at the top it said SELECT NETWORK PROTOCOL
in that box there was 2 main sections
#1 Manufacturer and in that box it had.......Meetinghouse Data Communications. Under that it had MICROSOFT. Under that it had TOSHIBA.
In the box to the right which is labeled NETWORK PROTOCOL, it has AEGIS PROTOCOL ( IEEE 802.1x)v3.2.0.3. Under all that it says in dark print..... THIS DRIVER IS NOT DIGITALLY SIGNED!.

What do I do ?
The measure of man's real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
