fixit did not solve my problem.. further my system always crashes if idle for more than 5 minutes... is it a windows vista problem or do you think it is something else?

Try running safemode or start your system with a clean boot to check on the difference.

What is public a movie? Did you let window's notify you when updates are available? We do not know yet if its a hardware/software or infection at this point. More info. is needed.

sorry for late response. I was trying to publish a movie (using the windows movie maker software).

it shows 4 important updates (those updates seem to be old). i had previously installed .net framework and that was causing update failure. i manually removed the .net framework using add remove programs.

also my mcafee total protection real time scanning keeps turning off.. i just upgraded to total protection 2012. i would like to reformat my machine and may be upgrade to windows 7. but i want to back up all my pics/videos and afraid to use my external hardrive (for the fear of corrupting it).

If these are windows updates failing, try disabling Mcaffee antivirus or features and redo the update. You could also download them manually from the support site.

I don't use McAfee so I'm not familiar with that setting. If you have a Cd or installer, you might want to reinstall your antivirus. Can you post the updates being notified. Go to Control panel-System and security-Check for updates.

You could try this:
How do I reset Windows Update components? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058.

This is a different "Fixit" then presented by hamluis. This works on all versions of Vista.

Brooks
