Hello, first time post here. Hopefully I have all the info you helpers need. First off this is not my computer. My Roommate asked me to help her get her pictures back said they had just "disappeared". Took me a minute or two too realize that her entire user account was changed to "hidden files/folders". After unhiding her entire user account which took about 5 minutes. Her pictures and everything else was back. Installed Avast for her and it did a boot scan finding a rootkit. I didnít catch the name of the rootkit, instead I blindly instructed it to remove it. Iím almost positive it didnít remove the rootkit. The entire computer seizes to operate after loading desktop and shows the time glass cursor and stops there. It runs quite well in safemode nothing is slow and everything seems to work well. I followed all the steps in the stickied post. I was unable to get the D.D.S to run. It shows the command window and closes but nothing after that no log file no prompt for anything. I am not sure if there is anything blocking the script or how I would go about stoping it from blocking it. Perhaps Safe mode is to blame. Im not sure. The GMER log is attached. IF I am missing anything please let me know. Iím done with this 4 am post lol . Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/433322 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hi,

please try running OTL instead:

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

please run unhide.exe and let me know if that restores you startup menu and files: unhide.exe.

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    :otl
    O4 - HKU\S-1-5-21-3564537765-2289445238-2048534338-1000..\Run: [kmCiLdhHPnMcPi.exe] C:\ProgramData\kmCiLdhHPnMcPi.exe File not found
    [2011/11/27 11:11:32 | 000,000,320 | -H-- | C] () -- C:\ProgramData\~hDBjkPmVZUwsCP
    [2011/11/27 11:11:32 | 000,000,224 | -H-- | C] () -- C:\ProgramData\~hDBjkPmVZUwsCPr
    [2011/11/27 11:10:29 | 000,000,456 | -H-- | C] () -- C:\ProgramData\hDBjkPmVZUwsCP
    :files
    C:\Windows\tasks\at*.job
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, when done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
  • Please post that log in your next reply.

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process.
If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
================================Follow up scan=================================
  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.

I see you have malwarebytes installed. What did it find?

regards myrti

I ran the unhide program. In my first post I had stated I found all the files and un hid them all.

That is the first log you have requested.

*UPdate* Im looking at the Malwarebytes logs. I have 3 of them . I can post all 3 if you would like. But for now ill just list what is in the Quarantine.

-- Malware.Trace

-- Adware.Softomate

-- Adware.Mywebsearch

-- Hijack.Startmenu

I installed Mbam originally before my first post on this forum. Hoping that it and a few other programs would help. Not realizing what I was up against . I am going to run it again now and post that log for you.

Thanks for your continuted efforts

Hello. Its strange you dont see any rootkits. As the computer completely freezes on boot , unless i run it in safe mode. I shall try again after this post and post back. This is the most current mbam log

Hi, I just tried to boot the comp normaly. It loaded windows to desktop worked for about 10 seconds and then the mouse froze and became completely unresponsive. Would not open task manager or anything. Im looking at msconfig boot services and startup programs. There is alot going on there lol . I un checked things I recongized and things that looked fishy. I did how ever see in the "Startup" that it listed "Microsoft Windows Operating System" 4 times in a row. It looks legit I just dont ever recall seeing that. Is there maybe a way to make a log of what the system is booting in msconfig for you to look at? I know you say that you dont see anything but, the computer freezes fully after 10 seconds of desktop load. Let me know what you think I should and can do and if your able to help me further. Thanks for your help thus far.

Hi,

there;s a number of windows files that run on startup:

O4 - HKLM..\Run: [Windows Defender] C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe (Microsoft Corporation)
O4 - HKLM..\Run: [Windows Mobile-based device management] C:\Windows\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe (Microsoft Corporation)
O4 - HKCU..\Run: [Sidebar] C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe (Microsoft Corporation)

Just to list a few. Most of them are unneeded though.

Well if you think you have a rooktit please run ComboFix:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper
