I've been running windows 7 for over a year now with no virus trouble, but yesterday my computer got infected with the win7antispyware virus (which I fixed successfully with the bleepingcomputers guide) However, now I'm having problems with a google redirect virus which redirects pretty much any google search to a website that has a blue "s" in the top left corner, a description of the website i wanted to go to, and then a list of obvious malware sites as "sponsored results." I tried TDSSkiller, I tried a full scan with malwarebytes, and then I tried using Norton Power Eraser, all of which claimed to have fixed the problem, but if I try to run firefox without having told it to run as administrator, I get redirected again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea what I'm dealing with and am not particularly code-savvy.

Thanks!

Since I'm on XP, don't know what works for Win7, but would be interested to find out. Have new Win7 computer sitting here which I haven't set up yet, very gunshy.

Did you try running GMER to see what it finds?

I don't know what GMER is, but I'll give it a shot. I should also add that whenever I run Malwarebytes scans, the scan gets about 2/3 of the way done and then my computer bluescreens with a "pagefault in nonpaged area" tag. This did not happen before I started getting redirected.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.
-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning

Let me ask..
Are you on a router? Are other machines on it,if so are they redirecting?

Do you use Firefox?

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

I am wirelessly connected to a network through a router, but no other computers on the network are being affected, and I am using Firefox. Here's the results from the GooredFix run I did:

Ok, 2 possibilities here
1,,,In FireFox it may be the Add ons/Plugins. try disabling them one at a time and see which one was at fault.

How to disable extensions and plugins

Keeping your third-party plugins up to date

If you still redirect than the malware is protected and needs to be dug out.

We need a deeper look. Please go here....
Preparation Guide ,do steps 6 - 9.

Create a DDS log and post it in the new topic explained in step 9,which is here Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks.
If Gmer won't run, skip it and move on.
Include a link back to this topic.

Let me know if that went well.

Thanks! Created the new topic, all the scans seemed to go smoothly except GMER wouldn't let me select any boxes except the bottom 3 so I skipped it since we've already run it.

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRL Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

The current wait time is 3 - 5 days and ALL logs are amswered.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.
