Posted 18 December 2011 - 08:04 PM

I am running a Sony Vaio, Windows Vista 32-bit with Avast as the antivirus. I was recently infected with Vista Antivirus bug and followed directions on this site for removing it. I thought I was successful but it reappeared a week later ( yesterday ). I repeated all the steps and seem to have cleared it but now I cannot connect to the internet on that computer. At first I tried to do a System restore but it would not successfully complete with any of the saved ( 4 total ) Restore points. I did some researching and found the problem seems to be with the DCHP service. I cannot get it to turn on. I would get the following error message:

"The operation could not be completed. The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion. "

I did some reading on the microsoft help forums and found instructions ( http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-networking/error-1075-the-dependency-service-does-not-exist/39ec4b3e-8a6d-48d1-bf52-25fe7c47b3de ). So first I ran the following command: CMD /K SC QC DHCP and the results were:
Service_Name: dhcp
Type : 20 Win32_Share_Process
Start Type : 2 Auto Start
Error Control:1 Normal
Binary Path Name: c:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -l LocalServiceNetw
orkRestricted
Load Order Group = TDI
Tag = 0
Display Name = DHCP Client
Dependencies = NSI
= Tdx
= Afd

I followed the rest of the instructions and found that when I go to the Device Manager > Show hidden.. >Nonplug and play
the asd and TCP/IP Protocol Driver drivers are listed and shown as working correctly, as well as have the correct settings as shown in the above link.
However the " NetBios over Tcpip " is not listed there.
I also did the SFC scan. That scan I believe stated it had found a corrupt file(s) which would be corrected after reboot. I did the reboot but no change.

To make things worse, I recently moved and can't find my Vista installation disc. I was planning on replacing this laptop but wanted to keep it functioning for my kids to use. By now I'm at a loss and appreciate your help. I have run GMER and DDS and the results are being posted next. I have attached the DDS attach file as well. Thank you in advance.

I believe these were created by the sfc scan.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/433258 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

**** End of log ****

I had a friend send me his Vista disc and it should arrive today. Can I use that to repair this without reinstalling ? If I need to reinstall I will as a last resort.

If you want to repair it is of course up to you, but after that your are on your own.

I understand. I was asking only if that would be the best course as in my earlier post I stated I did not have a disk and now I do.

Before we proceed I would like to clarify this. We try to do this with minimum damage to the system. I don't recommend a repair install. However, if you decide to do a repair install with the Vista disk I might not be able to assist you any more.

Please disregard my last post. While I was posting you had already posted your reply.:)

Please download Attached File  regfix.reg   1.11KB   12 downloads
Transfer it to the infected computer. Don't run it yet.

Please go to Start=>Run (alternatively use Windows key+R), type regedit and click OK.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root
Right-Click Root and select Permissions...
Click Advanced.
Under Owner tab select the entry starting with you user name, example: Farbar(Farbar-PC\Farbar)
Put a check mark next to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and click Apply and OK.
Under Security type while Everyone is selected put a check mark in the box under Allow next to Full Control.
Click Apply and OK.
Now double-click regfix.reg and confirm the prompt. In case you get a notification that not all the data could be imported, please let me know.
Please go back to the the Root key again while Everyone is selected remove check mark in the box under Allow next to Full Control and close the registry editor.

Restart, wait a few minutes, check the connection and post a fresh FSS log.

When I clicked on Replace Owner... and hit apply I got the following message.

" Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys"
