Here's my log. I have an "Easy CD & DVD Creator" "install" that starts every time I reboot - can't get rid of it. Some popups, though repeated spybot and AdAware invocations seem to have reduced them. I get alternate white background with "Active Desktop Recovery" and black with the "Everyone knows what filth is on your computer" message.

I know - no AV. Tried to download and install Norton - installation failed repeatedly. Cannot get to McAfee web site. I can, however, nslookup www.mcafee.com and get an IP that will start opening with McAfee logo, so I appear to have lost control of DNS within the browser. I did run Norton before installation, with the following result:

***NOTE: Close this window to continue installing the product.***

reallypoed, welcome.

Please print this out and follow ALL these directions carefully.

Go into "Easy CD & DVD Creator" and look for a Tools or Options menu to find the setting for "Start with Windows"

In each autostarted application (the O4 entries) go Tools or Options and uncheck the Start with Windows function.

If you really must use a Startup Manager then Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel is very good.
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Read about XoftSpy
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Make sure 'show all files' is enabled:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup.
More detailed instructions here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406

Go to Add/Remove Programs and un-install XoftSpy and anything that looks like WinTools

Find and delete if still present:
C:\ARCHIVE.MHT <== file

C:\Program Files\XoftSpy
C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools
<== folders

Start HijackThis and tick the boxes next to all these, then close all browser and explorer windows, and tell HijackThis to "Fix checked" if still present.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [XoftSpy] C:\Program Files\XoftSpy\XoftSpy.exe -s
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows AdTools] C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\WinAdTools.exe

Reboot and Install the prevention protection below and help your friends from being infected on the Internet.

Empty the Recycle Bin frequently.

Run CleanUp! as the Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there.
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/
Then reboot to let it clean out what it found.

By the way, in order to improve Internet Explorer (IE) performance the Temporary(TIF)should be cleaned out periodically.
Also, it is a good idea to limit the size of the TIF to 200MB for performance sake.
In IE go to Tools then Internet Options then Settings and move the slider down to 200MB.

Download and install WinPatrol.
http://www.winpatrol.com

Browser settings for increased security:
http://bshagnasty.home.att.net/browsersettings.htm

Install IE-SPYAD then run the install.bat in the ie-spyad folder and SpywareBlaster then keep them up to date as today's Internet is full of nasty infections.

OK, thanks - much better. However, I still have the "Warning! You're in danger!" background, I can't get to www.symantec.com (or www.mcafee.com) though I can from the Mac on the other side of my desk, and logging in is *really* slow - like almost a minute!

reallypoed, TGBRFV is a new porn site hijack in your log.

Make sure 'show all files' is enabled:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup.
More detailed instructions here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...001052409420406

Find and delete if still present:

TGBRFV_ <== file

Start HijackThis and tick the boxes next to all these, then close all browser and explorer windows, and tell HijackThis to "Fix checked" if still present.
