A few nights ago I lost Internet access after running Combofix. Another new user posted a thread detailing almost the exact same problem at the same time as I did. They have not bothered to reply to their request, so I am posting this one.

Our computer was running extremely slow, so after reviewing the running processes under Windows Task Manager, I noticed the ping.exe process taking 100% of my CPU resources. In order to fix this problem I ran ComboFix. I have used Combofix before to eradicate the XP Internet Security 2012 virus and browser redirects, with no problems.

We have a HP computer running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002 Service Pack 3. The anti-virus is McCafee provided by AOL. It has worked well for us outside of the XP Internet Security 2012 virus issue.

Combofix ran, but at one point a window mentioned that if there were Internet access problems, run the tool again. I did that. Still no access.

Reboot and manual repair of the network connection doesn't work, as well as the Internet Explorer connection repair option.

I tried to run System Restore. It reported the computer could not be returned to any previous restore points.

A tech person with AOL couldn't resolve the problem, as well as the tech department with our Internet service provider. He seemed to think it was the anti-virus program blocking access, but I removed the whole anti-virus program, with still no access. At one point the Windows firewall said it was on, but it wouldn't let me turn it off and is now stating "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection (ICS) sharing service."

I cannot download anymore scan tools to that computer because of the connection problem. This is being posted from our laptop. Safe to say our wireless/router is working so the issue isn't there. The computer with the connection issue is running just fine in all other areas. Just no Internet connection.

The last log generated by Combofix is attached.

Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

Gringo,

Like I said, I can't download and run any tools because my computer has no Internet connection whatsoever. A am writing this from our laptop. All I have is Combofix downloaded on the computer already. Are the programs you mentioned small enough to be downloaded onto a flash drive?

Hello mike

yes they are all small in size

Lets check your internet connection

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure "Include All Files" option remains checked.
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

FCopy::
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\ipsec.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ipsec.sys

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo!!

I am posting this from the computer that had the Internet access issue! It works! :busy:

The ComboFix copy I had on this computer said it was "outdated" when I dropped the CFScript.txt in it, then deleted itself. I checked your recent postings on another thread and downloaded an updated version to the flash drive I was using. ComboFix ran and I noticed immediate connection activity on the little monitors in the task-bar, as well as the red X disappearing on the AOL icon there as well. There were two error windows that popped up during the procedure; I didn't write them down but noticed one of them in the log. (Listed below per your directive. Maybe you can use something from this resolved issue for future reference?)

I got online and downloaded another version of McCafee and cannot find any issues whatsoever with the functionality of this machine, hardware or software wise.

Thanks, Gringo! This is a great Christmas present!

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realize. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore just move to the next item on the list.

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.

Gringo,

Thanks again for your invaluable help!

I deleted through add/remove the programs you listed, with no issues. Viewpoint Media Player wanted to reinstall after I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but I declined.

Per your instructions, the results on all three scans are listed below:

TFC error window. It would not run: TFC.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Malwarebytes log. It found six items and deleted them all:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.51.2.1300

Database version: 911122503

Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded start-up entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

If you have any problems running Hijackthis see NOTE** below (Host file not read, blank notepad ...)

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcFDMonitor] C:\WINDOWS\ALCFDRTM.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcWzrd] ALCWZRD.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UMonit] C:\WINDOWS\system32\UMonit.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Google Updater] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Updater\GoogleUpdater.exe" -check_deprecation
