Below is a copy of the HijackThis Log after I ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, Symantec AntiVirus, AboutBuster. I have SpywareBlaster installed.

The computer is sluggish and seem to get hung up on routine tasks, like connecting to a link.

I had to boot with the Win 2000 CD. I could not even get the desktop installed completely before it would have up.

I have a Neo Tool Bar that I don't know the origin.

Thanks.

Hi polaris6

You are running HijackThis from your Desktop. You will need to move hijackthis.exe to a permanent folder, such as c:\hjt . This has to be done as HijackThis creates backups when you fix items. You do not want them accidentally deleted or spread all over your Desktop.

First create a new folder:
A. Click My Computer icon on your desktop
B. Click C: drive
C. Click the File menu --> New --> Folder, a folder "New folder" will be created.
D. Rename it HJT

Move\Unzip hijackthis.exe to the c:\HJT folder.

Download this: Getservices.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices folder and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

The trojan mutates on every reboot, post please also a fresh HJT log.

From the moment you post your list, until you see a detailed fix written up, DO NOT reboot your system or log off. If you do, the service will have changed and the fix provided will not work.

Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Thank you. I just noticed your response. I thought I checked the box that would notify me when a message arrived.

More information on the problems.

I cannot access 'my computer' icon in the 'normal' mode and I don't have 'Windows Explorer' on the Desktop; ( I can access this shortcut in the 'Safe' mode. ) I cannot access folders I have on the Desktop; I cannot access the Control Panel from the Start Menu.

How do I get to my folders now?

I have 'picked up' some 'behavior' during this process of 'Safe Mode' and 'non Safe Mode' booting.

For example, I have some folders on the Desktop which I cannot open in the 'non Safe Mode'; I right click on them and there is no information regarding size, etc. However, in the Safe Mode, I open them perfectly.

In the non Safe Mode, when I right click on My Computer, nothing happens (it just blinks at me and does nothing); however, in the Safe Mode, I get the Drop Down Window and can open 'Explore'.

Operations are executed swiftly in the Safe Mode; not so in the non Safe Mode. The computer 'hangs' frequently in the non-Safe Mode; not so in the Safe Mode.

I have run every one of my scan programs again, only to 'discover' nothing is in hiding that I can detect or correct.

Please disable temporarily TeaTimer as it may interfere with HijackThis.

Please download About:Buster from here: About:Buster Download. Once it is downloaded extract it to
c:\aboutbuster. We will use that program later in this process. Don't use it yet.

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINNT\system32\quogt.dll/sp.html#32777
O2 - BHO: Neo Toolbar - {722E8B26-1C44-460F-88BB-50C82B20E30E} - C:\WINNT\system32\searchbar.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Neo Toolbar - {722E8B26-1C44-460F-88BB-50C82B20E30E} - C:\WINNT\system32\searchbar.dll

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

REBOOT your computer.

Search for these files and delete them if found:
C:\WINNT\system32\quogt.dll <-- this file
C:\WINNT\system32\searchbar.dll <-- this file

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Please save the log and post it later together with the HJT log.

Perform a full scan here: Trendmicro, tick AutoClean and let him remove anything he finds.

Run HijackThis! again and post a new log.

TeaTimer is a tool of Spybot-S&D which perpetually monitors the processes called/initiated.

Right click the trayicon and select "Exit Spybot S&D Resident".

Below I have attached the logs for 'aboutbuster' and 'hijackthis'.

While I removed those recommended from the hijackthis log, they reappear again after I reboot, specifically those which contain the 'neo toolbar' reference.

I tried to remove the 2 files you recommended, and was successful with only one of them (quogt.dll); the other (searchbar.dll) produced a message... 'cannot delete search.dll. The specified file is being used by Windows'...The 'search' function does not operate in the non-safe mode. I tried to remove them in the safe mode (the search function works in that mode), and the non-safe mode (I actually went to the directory/folder and tried to deleete them.

I ran 'Panda' as well. Neither Trendmicro or Panda found any viruses.

The Home Page on IE6 defaults to 'google.com' after boot up, even after I change it in the Interneet Options.

Below are the 2 logs:

Download KillBox here:
KillBox. Unzip it to your desktop.

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

O2 - BHO: Neo Toolbar - {722E8B26-1C44-460F-88BB-50C82B20E30E} - C:\WINNT\system32\searchbar.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Neo Toolbar - {722E8B26-1C44-460F-88BB-50C82B20E30E} - C:\WINNT\system32\searchbar.dll

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Start Killbox.exe

Select the Delete on reboot option.

Copy and paste the line below in the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"
C:\WINNT\system32\searchbar.dll

Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, press the YES button.

Your computer will reboot.

Run HijackThis again and post a new log please.
Can you acces all item now ? Start menu, Desktop, Control Panel, etc. ?
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Thank you very much.

I am now 'at sea' (on a boat) and won't be back to my desktop until Tue Nov 9. I will implement your suggestions then and report back with the new 'log'.

Thanks again.

I have run 'killbox.exe' as directed and rebooted. I cannot get to the Hihackthis.exe file. The computer has slowed down so much, I don't know where it is in the execution cycle.

No, I was not able to access the Start Menus, Desktop, etc. Perhaps if I waited longer, I could connect. There are 'minutes' between when I click and there is a response.

I am writing this from my wife's computer.

I feel that the situation is far worse now than before the 'killbox.exe' exercise.

I tried to run the Start programs, etc in Safe Mode and they work fine. There is now slow-down when I run in the Safe Mode.
