Sorry about last night. For some reason, I couldn't post anything containing resembling a log. Would always fail to go through. Could be the malware blocking me discussing it? I've had that happen before. Incredibly annoying as you have to ask friends to do everything for you ( if I searched for the virus, it would close my browser, if I left the command prompt open for too long, it would restart my computer ). So right now, I'm trying from a different computer.

============= FINISH: 16:45:15.68 ===============

Gmer log

Nothing to attach. The thing always fails a third of the way through with access errors on 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\config\*'. Around this time, AVG will also trigger with a hit on 'Afd.sys' as Trojan horse Backdoor.Generic14.CBLO.

Background information

Around the same time I noticed 'Ping.exe' acting strangely, I also got one of those fake anti-virus software things. Don't recall what it was called, but the process was called 'lgc.exe.' Could be random, I don't know, but that might help. Whenever I killed the task, it would restart itself. What I ended up doing to get rid of it was I flushed the registry of any mention of 'lgc.exe,' than I killed the task and deleted the source. The malware was some type of shell so anytime I ran a .exe, the .exe would run through the malware so the malware could report a hit or something, so when I deleted it, .exes no longer worked. I had to relink HKEY_something\..\.exe to HKEY_something_else\..\exefile.

This is a Windows XP SP3 machine. I am fairly computer literate so you can hit me with just about anything. If I don't understand, I will ask.

Symptoms

'Ping.exe,' if left alone, will appear in the task manager and eventually consume large amounts of CPU cycles and larger amounts of RAM. If the task is killed, it automatically restarts. 'Ping.exe' is run under command line 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\Ping 127.0.0.1 -t' under owner 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs'. I believe the following files to be associated with the malware: 'Ping.exe,' 'Ping6.exe,' 'PathPing.exe,' 'Afd.sys.' Furthermore, the following files may also be associated 'Svchost.exe' and 'Pintlgnt.ime.' However, with the exception of 'Afd.sys,' none of these show up as hits in AVG, Malwarebytes, Spybot or Kaspersky.

I was also getting tons of browser redirects, but I fixed this by flushing hosts, and constantly killing 'Ping.exe.' I also switched to FireFox for NoScript. Now, when I click a search result, it goes to the page and doesn't load the page until I hit reload a couple of times. I believe its trying to pull its redirect shenanigans but is unable to.

While I am not certain of the intent, if left uncontrolled, they will download more malware, though I do not know if it is intentional or by chance. Around the same time, I was running a defragment and in the logs, noticed a high amount of fragmentation in random folders under directory 'C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\'. I attempted to clean these folders out manually ( I could not use CMD as the directory is super secret or something ), but they immediately refilled.

Deleting any of the above mentioned files ( except 'Svchost.exe' and 'Afd.sys' which I am too afraid to touch ) will lead them to being instantly regenerated as the offending version.

My conclusions

'Ping.exe' is just browsing random websites really fast in the background. Why? I don't know. But it doesn't show up as malware, which is very disconcerting. I do not know if it is downloading additional malware, but I believe so. Deleting the files has no effect so there's a dropper somewhere, possibly 'Afd.sys.'

Finally, I believe 'Ping.exe' to be infected, but 'Ping6.exe' to be a renamed copy of the correct 'Ping.exe.' Attempting to ping now calls on 'PathPing.exe' which redirects to 'Ping6.exe' to fool the user into thinking 'Ping.exe' is not malicious. I am not certain of this, but that is my hunch.

Measures taken

Got rid of the fake anti-virus.

Currently letting AVG do its thing by preventing access to 'Afd.sys.' It appears to be actually important, so I don't want to touch it yet. Kinda sorta. I did attempt a safe delete ( I backed up 'Afd.sys' before delete ), but 'Afd.sys' automatically regenerated. Don't know if its Windows going "OH NOES, YOU'VE DONE SOMETHING STUPID AND I'M FIXING IT" or the dropper going "OH NO YOU DON'T AMATEUR."

Can't do anything about 'Svchost.exe' of course.

I currently have two batch scripts running in infinite loops. One kills 'Ping.exe' from the task manager every 8 seconds and another one that deletes 'Ping.exe,' 'Ping6.exe,' 'PathPing.exe' and 'Pintlngt.ime' every second.

Note that I do stop these scripts when I run my scans. Otherwise, of course, the file won't even be there to scan.

I've attempted to create dummy 'Ping.exe' files set to read only with all access permissions set to deny to prevent regeneration. I've also opened up 'Ping.exe' in notepad++ and filled it with random gibberish in hopes of corrupting the file. None of these methods work as the files still regenerate regardless.

I have also reset my hosts file and switched to FireFox to take advantage of NoScript.

As you can tell, I've been very aggressive in countering this malware, but unfortunately, this time, my instincts aren't much good.

Thank you very much for your time. Please do offer your recommendations as soon as possible as this is on a workstation.

Okay, I can't post anything resembling a log. The page always times out after I click post. I don't know why this is happening because I can post anything else fine. It could be this malware is preventing me from speaking of it.

Attach.log is below:

==== End Of File ===========================

I'd like to note contrary to your explicit instructions, the instructions provided by DDS.scr instructs the user to attach the attach.txt as an attachment to the post.

Thank you for your time. Please do hurry. I think Ping.exe, in its routine visits to random websites, is downloading additional malware. While I do have a script to kill it continuously running in the background, this morning, when I returned to this workstation ( I normally work at a different workstation ), I found the computer had restarted itself and Ping.exe had been running for who knows how long. I guess I didn't instruct the scripts to run on startup. It is possible there is now new malware on this PC.

Again, thank you for your time.

Okay, I can post the Attach.log.

So my guess is if I can figure out which part of DDS.log I can't post, I can figure out the source. So I'll be posting DDS.log below bit by bit until I hit the fail point.

DDS.log is below:

So I'm being blocked from accessing the Windows update service. Well... I guess I should've seen that one coming. I don't know what else I could've been expecting honestly.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Sorry, this is some guy's workstation so its hard to get time on it. I will run your suggested fixes when I get the opportunity. This is just to let you know turnaround on my end may take longer than normal; entirely on me.
