(Edit) added GMER log and link to networking thread.
(Edit 2) added reason why cryptodan thought something was amiss (at the end of this post)

Hi

A little over a week ago, MSE caught a virus that had dropped into netbt.sys and maybe some other file (can't remember) and it recommended removing the file. I did. Upon reboot, my computer could no longer establish an internet connection. I looked around the internet, copied over a netbt.sys from a working computer with the same OS, and even tried to muck around with the registry keys related to netbt.sys. I finally got internet access when I manually set my IP address in the TCP/IP properties. In the meantime, I started a malware thread on another site but didn't get a response. So I started a malware thread on a different site and got a user to help me clean out my system (username is similar to one I see helping people on this site). My computer was deemed clean, but the network still was not good. I then came here to the networking forum and had cryptodan help me out. We identified the problem to be that the Services -> DHCP Client was not automatically starting up even though it a) was set to automatically start up and B) clicking on START started it up just fine and enabled me to use the internet in DHCP mode instead of manual IP address mode. However we then ran TDSSKiller as another site had some users have some success here. It found nothing to my novice eyes, but cryptodan suggested that my computer could still be infected and redirected me here, and so here I am.
Here's the networking thread with cryptodan: Cleaned out virus that hit netbt.sys, but internet no longer working

(Just noticed on the original malware help site that I got a response over a week after I started the request. I will tell them that I will get help from you guys as you all seem to have good fast response times.)

Now for the reason why cryptodan redirected me here.
After running TDSSKiller with default settings and getting nothing, I then clicked on Verify Driver Digital Signatures and rescanned. This turned up 9 unsigned drivers that made cryptodan uncomfortable and sent me here (snippet from the log):

As for computer symptoms, the only one I'm noticing right now is that Services->DHCP Client is not starting automatically, even though it is set to automatic. When I click on Start, it starts no problem. It just doesn't start automatically on boot-up. But if cryptodan is right, maybe there's a more subtle bug out there.

Thanks

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Close any open browsers, and all other programs working. Make sure you save your file if working on a document.
  • Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.[/b]
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
===

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause of infiltration an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Please post the logs and let me know if the problem persists.

Post the logs for my review.

Hi nasdaq.

I ran both as you requested. Just want to reiterate that the only problem that affects my daily use is the inability for Services->DHCP client to start up automatically, even when it's set to automatic. I have to manually click start each time before I can get an internet connection. What brought me to this particular forum is your fellow advisor cryptodan's concern over 9 unverified digital driver services. Probably benign, but he did not know.

So as for your request, I let Combofix run and then reboot my machine and then let Security Check run. After that, I tried to connect to the internet, but it was a no go because the DHCP Client would not automatically start. I then went into Services to start it and now am posting from the affected computer.

Anyway, here are the log files...

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java™ 6 Update 29

p.s. Upddate 30 came out a few days ago.

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Include in your download" this is not required. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

OK, I updated java and will update Adobe Reader in a little bit.

For the FSS scan, it should be said that the computer is connected to the internet because I manually clicked on Start for Service -> DHCP Client. And I think the results reflect that. I will also reboot my computer and run FSS without touching anything to show you what it looks like on boot up.

First is the current settings after my manual "Start".

Go to http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/files/download/9-registry-network-keys/
Download the correct zip file for your Windows: Windows 7 (Seven.zip), Vista.zip, or XP.zip.

In you case you should download the XP.zip.

Double-click to open the zip file.
Double-click each one of the six .reg files in turn and click Yes to add it to the Registry.

Reboot.

How is it now?

Ran all 6.

Rebooted. Computer still can't connect to the internet and this time manually trying to start DHCP Client yields the following error:

Could not start the DHCP Client service on Local Computer.

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

I then reran FSS.

Got the following new or changed messages (sorry, posting from a different computer)
Service Check:
Dhcp Service section (same as before, ie not running)

Dnscache Service is not running. Checking service configuration:
The start type of Dnscache service is OK.
The ImagePath of Dndcache service is OK.
The ServiceDll of Dnscache service is OK.

NetBt Service (same as before, ie not running)

Tcipip Service is not running. Checking service configuration:
The start type of Tcpip service is OK.
The ImagePath of Tcpip service is OK.

File Check: (same as before...all legit)

Connection Status:
Localhost is blocked.
There is no connection to network.
Attempt to access Google IP returned error: Other errors
Attempt to access Yahoo IP returned error: Other errors

The computer is also a bit sluggish now, taking 10-20 seconds to get out of the screen saver.

Negative.

I copied the MSI file over to my broken computer and ran the fix. After a bunch of status bar windows, I got a final window that said:

Microsoft FixIt failed to process.

What next?

I rebooted the computer before running the MSI file, but it still feels a bit sluggish.

Two more things (edited from just 1).

The computer runs really hot now because two processes are each running at 50% CPU.
1) AcSvc.exe
2) SvcGuiHlpr.exe

Also, when I reboot the computer, not only does it take a long time to start up, but I get an error message near the end of startup from Client Security Solution:

"There was a problem connecting to the TPM (security device) on this computer. It is possible that anti-virus or firewall software is blocking the connection. A missing or disabled device driver could also cause this problem. Please refer to the online documentation for more information."

I've never seen either behavior/message before.

Thanks

This process if not important. Please Open the TaskManager and disable it.

C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities\SvcGuiHlpr.exe

Re boot the computer.

Any improvement?

If not then I suggest you start a new topic in the Networking forum

An expert in that field should be able to help. This is not my forte.

Keep me posted.

Hi nasdaq

Before I go back to networking, is my computer clean of malware? The reason I came to the malware forum was because cryptodan (BC Advisor) sent me this way when he suspected I might still be infected. Can you confirm that my computer is clean, so that I can either reopen the thread in the networking forum that I have with him, or make sure that another advisor does not send me back here again?
Just as a reminder, the thing that caught his eye was the following entries in TDSSKiller's log (when I was turned on the Verify Driver digital Signatures option)

Can you find any issue with these entries?

BTW, I'm not sure how to "disable" SvcGuiHlpr.exe, but I went into the TaskManager and killed the process. Right away AtService.exe replaced it as a 50% CPU hog. And nothing new with the internet.

I then rebooted and of course SvcGuiHlpr is back and hogging 50% CPU again.

Thanks for helping me get everything in order.

Just as a reminder, the thing that caught his eye was the following entries in TDSSKiller's log (when I was turned on the Verify Driver digital Signatures option)
Unfortunately not all drivers are signed by the manufacturer.

Take these two ANC
11:51:04.0968 5888 ANC ( UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic ) - skipped by user
11:51:04.0968 5888 ANC ( UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic ) - User select action: Skip
They are drivers and is you google ANC.SYS you will find that the file is good.
I checked all the others.

We can check the validity of these files.

Hi nasdaq.

I ran the tool and will past the message below. I googled the AtSvc and SvcGuiHlpr.exe and it looks like it's a Thinkpad related bug...probably with Access Connections. I read somewhere that it might be trying to read or write to a registry and my thinking is that perhaps after the registry modifications, the locations it is trying to read or write from are no longer there?
I then killed both processes instead of just SvcGuiHlpr.exe. CPU usage dropped to 23% and only with AtService.exe. Network of course, still doesn't work.

I think at this point, I have a couple things that I need help with.
a) making sure my computer is indeed clean of malware so that I can again receive assistance for my networking issues.
B) figuring out what happened to my AccessConnections programs. One site suggested I reinstall/update to the latest version as a fix
c) Get my computer back on the internet...since now not only does DHCP Client not start up automatically, it can't even start up manually. =(

Thanks
